CMS revises RAC program to increase transparency, oversight

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will revise its Recovery Audit Contractors program to sharpen agency oversight, reduce the burden on providers and increase transparency. Under the new plan, CMS will restrict the RAC program's window for patient status reviews to six months if the provider submits its claim within three months of the date of service.

Certification application deadline fast approaching

Economist expects continued low growth in healthcare costs

Reviewing growth in health expenditures over the past century and a half, Tom Getzen, executive director of the International Health Economics Association, concludes in an Altarum Institute blog post that the worst of the healthcare cost crisis appears to have passed. "It is 'excess growth' in medical costs that increases the health share of GDP and causes fiscal problems, such as health insurance premiums that persistently rise faster that wages or tax revenues," he writes.

Getting mental health services can be hard, despite law requiring parity
The Washington Post
Even though more Americans than before have access to health insurance because of the Affordable Care Act, getting mental health services can still be challenging. A report released in November concludes that despite a 2008 mental health parity law, some state exchange health plans may have a way to go to even the playing field between mental and physical benefits.
