ACMA
According to a just-released inpatient payment proposal for 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services plans to gather more feedback on the "two-midnight rule" before changing the controversial measure of inpatient vs. outpatient stays. "We note that hospitals and physicians continue to voice their concern with parts of the 2-midnight rule ... Therefore, we are considering this feedback carefully," the CMS stated in the report.

Insured wait on King v. Burwell decision
Healthcare Finance
The Affordable Care Act mandates that all Americans get health coverage or pay a penalty. To help people pay for that insurance, the federal government subsidizes insurance premiums for millions of Americans. In just a couple of months, the Supreme Court will rule in a major case concerning those subsidies. The question is whether the law allowed for them across the country or just in the minority of states that set up their own insurance exchanges. A decision to take away those subsidies could leave millions without insurance.

Tennessee, Kansas also get warning: Expand Medicaid or risk hospital funds
Kaiser Health News
Add Tennessee and Kansas to the list of states that have been warned by the Obama administration that failing to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act could jeopardize special funding to pay hospitals and doctors for treating the poor. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services confirmed that it gave officials in those states the same message that had been delivered to Texas and Florida about the risk to funding for so-called "uncompensated care pools" — Medicaid money that helps pay the cost of care for the uninsured.

Few consumers are using quality, price information to make health decisions
Kaiser Health News
Despite the government's push to make health information more available, few people use concrete information about doctors or hospitals to obtain better care at lower prices, according to a poll released recently. Prices for the healthcare industry have historically been concealed and convoluted, unlike those for most other businesses. The 2010 health law aimed to make such information more transparent. People shopping for insurance can now compare the prices of competing plans through online marketplaces, including premiums, deductibles and their share of any medical expenses.

4 ways healthcare leaders can improve communication
FierceHealthcare
Effective communication is no easy feat, but it's more important than ever for healthcare leaders to clearly chart a way forward for their organizations as there is so much uncertainty and resistance in the industry, according to Hospital & Health Networks Daily. To do this, the article states, leaders must concentrate on their vision and strategy. A useful vision statement must explain how the healthcare organization will be different, and a successful strategy actually involves the articulation of "five to seven high-level driving strategies" that identify the most important steps the organization must take to realize the vision, according to the article.

Hospital-acquired conditions more likely for patients admitted on weekends
FierceHealthcare
A new study that found patients are more likely to experience hospital-acquired conditions during the weekend raises important questions about what causes HACs and highlights how much work the industry must do to cut down on these adverse events, according to an accompanying opinion piece. In the study, recently published in BMJ, researchers led by Frank J. Attenello, M.D., director of the department of neurosurgery at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine, analyzed data from 351 million patients discharged from U.S. hospitals between 2002 and 2010.
