CMS rolls out five-star scale to rank hospitals on patient experience
FierceHealthcare
In an attempt to simplify hospital quality ratings for consumers, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has unveiled a new feature on its Hospital Compare website that ranks facilities on a five-star scale, CMS announced recently. The star ratings will use data from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey, which measures patient experience at the nearly 3,500 Medicare-certified acute care hospitals according to metrics such as facility cleanliness, staff responsiveness and clinician communication.

How do hospital CEOs define population health?
FierceHealthcare
Population health management is a concept embraced by the healthcare industry, but because there is no real uniform definition of the term, George Washington University's online Executive Master of Health Administration program decided to ask healthcare leaders their opinions on what it really means. The term first emerged in 2003, when David Kindig and Greg Stoddart defined it as "the health outcome of a group of individuals, including the distribution of such outcomes within the group," according to the survey results.

How house calls can cut down on hospital readmissions
FierceHealthcare
The healthcare industry abounds with new ideas to reduce unplanned hospital readmissions and emergency department visits, but a New Jersey hospital has turned to a seemingly old-fashioned medical strategy — the house call. The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey, launched its Mobile Integrated Healthcare Program in August 2014 to provide "proactive, post-discharge home check-ups" to patients with cardiopulmonary disease who are at high risk for readmission and either declined or didn't qualify for home care services, according to a statement from the hospital.

5 reasons the Affordable Care Act will be good for Americans
Forbes
According to author Robert Pearl, M.D.: In October, 2013, at the launch of the Affordable Care Act, I predicted that the health insurance exchanges about to go into effect would grow in popularity and improve the health insurance marketplace, then so imperfect. Twenty months later, the exchanges are proving effective in reducing the number of uninsured and are beginning to provide the information people need to make an informed selection about which plan is best for their needs.

H&R Block: Affordable Care Act cut tax refunds $729
Kansas City Star
Two out of three taxpayers who got help from Uncle Sam to buy health insurance last year owed some of that money back come April 15, according to H&R Block Inc. The Kansas City-based tax preparation firm reported its customers' experiences under the Affordable Care Act and the just completed tax season. The healthcare law commonly called Obamacare helped pay part of the medical insurance premiums for those who qualified. The amount of the help was based on what the taxpayer had expected to earn during 2014.

No return trips: Hospitals under pressure to lower readmissions
Medscape
Hospitalizations are a lot like air travel. Being an inpatient, like flying coach, is somewhere between staying at a hotel and serving a prison sentence. The patients get to choose their meals and TV channels (to a point), the fellow passengers are usually well-behaved, and there is a lot riding on having someone competent at the controls. The healthcare industry's safety movement borrows heavily from the tools and terminology pioneered by the airlines. But although commercial airlines celebrate return customers, no one wants to be a "frequent flyer" at a hospital.

Hill republicans won't try to restructure Medicare — yet
Forbes
Congressional Republicans agreed to a non-binding budget framework that would slow projected growth of Medicare, but not completely restructure the program as the House GOP wanted. House Republicans tried to use the budget process to fundamentally rewrite Medicare, turning it from an open-ended entitlement program to a model known as premium support. But the move was blocked by Senate Republicans, who feared a political firestorm.
