CMS delays awarding new RAC contracts
AHA News
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has agreed to postpone awarding the new round of Recovery Auditor Contractor contracts until at least Aug. 15 because of pending litigation, according to court documents. CGI, one of the current RACs, has sued CMS in federal court to protest terms of CMS's proposed RAC contracts. CMS came to an agreement with the court to delay the awarding of new contracts while the court moves forward with proceedings in the case. AHA will continue to update members as more information regarding the new round of contracts is available.

Improve your department's efficiency with Compare
ACMA
Compare Benchmarking continues to grow not only in the number of participating hospitals and health systems, but also in the scope of services offered. Some recent additions include:
  • Tools to help staff assess readmission root causes and prevent additional readmissions, including a patient interview tool and a tool to facilitate communication with post-acute providers.
  • Enhanced content and frequency of staff training webinars. Subscribing hospitals are able to utilize this valuable resource to train and ensure competency on avoidable delays, denials and readmissions. The webinars include a competency test, and participants receive CEs for their participation.
These enhancements are in addition to the core of ACMA Compare — providing powerful tools and benchmarking to facilitate change related to avoidable delays, readmissions and denials.

If you would like to know more about Compare and evaluate it for your organization, please contact Randall Archer, director of sales and product development, at rarcher@acmaweb.org.

'I'm MacGyver,' says nurse honored at White House
HealthLeaders Media
According to the author Alexandra Wilson Pecci: Roxana Reyna was at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., on her cell phone when she took a break from her sightseeing to talk with me about the "making" she does as a Skin and Wound Care Prevention Specialist at Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was in D.C., as a special invited guest of the White House, and the excitement in her voice was obvious.

Social workers discuss enrollment process for health care under ACA
NASW News
Talking to people about their health is all in a day's work, according to Katie Merrill, an MSW student at the University of Albany School of Social Welfare in New York. Merrill is one of the student health care navigators for the university's contracted navigator program, which serves the New York counties of Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Columbia and Greene. "We would go out into the community, talk to people one on one, and sign them up for health care on the spot, using laptops," she said.

Hospital design needs to follow technology's lead
Forbes
In almost every industry, technology has made a dramatic impact on quality and cost. Consider the finance industry. Three years ago, you had to go to a bank or ATM to deposit a check. Now that's done via the bank's smartphone app. Technology has reset expectations of a "bank" to the point that many people will never use any bank that doesn't allow this.
