Medicare pilots strive to reduce appeals backlog
Illinois Hospital Association
The Dept. of Health & Human Services, Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals, recently posted on its website information about two pilot programs to address the current backlog of claims currently at the Administrative Law Judge level of appeal. Many of those appeals were the result of payment denials initiated by the Medicare Recovery Audit Contractors.

Heart of the matter: Treating the disease instead of the person
NPR
A 56-year-old man is having lunch with his wife at a seafood restaurant just outside Boston when he develops crushing chest pain. He refuses an ambulance, so the man's wife drives him to the ER. What happens next says a lot about the difference that being a doctor or a patient can make in how one feels about the healthcare system. First, how did the patient and his wife see the trip to the hospital? When the man arrives in the ER, he is told to take off his shirt. He lies in the hallway, in pain, naked from the waist up. Strangers surround him. They don't introduce themselves, and they talk over him, at each other.

What looks like overcharging by your hospital might not be
NPR
Despite concerns first raised a few years ago, hospitals do not seem to be abusing their electronic data systems to generate bigger bills and boost their income — at least according to authors of a large, recently released study. Other leaders in the field say the jury's still out. The concern over possible misuse of records grabbed headlines in 2012 after an investigation by the Center for Public Integrity and the New York Times found that some hospitals using electronic records were billing Medicare for significantly more than hospitals that still used paper records.
