CMS awards 14 more contracts under QIO program restructure
AHA News Now
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently awarded 14 Quality Improvement Organizations five-year contracts to work with healthcare providers on strategic quality initiatives and provide technical assistance to participants in CMS value-based purchasing programs. Each of the recipients, known as Quality Innovation Network-QIOs, will work with providers in specific states.

Caring for an aging population: Future challenges to case managers

Based on the Administration on Aging, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' report, "A Profile of Older Americans," in 2010, individuals aged 65 or older numbered 40.4 million — which represents 13.1 percent of the population in the U.S. It is estimated that by 2030, there will be almost twice the number of seniors than that of 2008, approximately 72.1 million. This will account for approximately 19.3 percent of the population. Based on the Administration on Aging, Department of Health and Human Services report, the life expectancy has increased by 30 years for a child born in 2009 when compared to that of 1900.

How jazz singer Dolly Baker found voice on deathbed
ABC News
American jazz singer Dolly Baker traveled the world, touching the lives of Harlem's jazz greats, Hollywood celebrities and presidents alike. But at the end of her life this year at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, she was just another patient on a medical chart. "Mother was a society lady," said Baker's daughter, Shira L'Heureux, an antiques and fine arts appraiser from Albuquerque, New Mexico. "Once, we had the whole Count Basie band in my mother's living room." She was born Thelma Dolly Baker, the daughter of a trumpet player and a dancer.

Court deals setback to healthcare law
The New York Times
A federal appeals court ruled that the government could not subsidize healthcare premiums for people in three dozen states that use the federal insurance exchange, a ruling that could upend President Barack Obama's healthcare law. The 2-to-1 ruling could potentially cut off financial assistance for more than 4.5 million people who were found eligible for subsidized insurance in the federal exchange, or marketplace.

$100 million in ACA funds go to local health centers
The Hill
The Department of Health and Human Services is doling out $100 million under the Affordable Care Act to help expand new health centers around the country. The grant money will be available to 150 new centers next year and is meant to increase access to healthcare for underserved communities and vulnerable populations. "In communities across the country, Americans turn to their local Community Health Center for vital health care services that help them lead healthy, productive lives," HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said in a statement.

Study: Care transition program tied to lower costs, utilization
Becker's Hospital Review
Care transitions intervention, a patient-centered coaching intervention, results in reduction of average cost of care among Medicare patients, according to a study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. Researchers analyzed fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries hospitalized from January 2009 to May 2011 in six Rhode Island hospitals.
