Study casts doubt on assumptions about hospital 'frequent fliers'
Kaiser Health News
Super-utilizers are the frequent fliers of the healthcare system, whose serious illnesses send them to the hospital multiple times every year and cost the system hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Figuring out how best to address these patients' needs and reduce their financial impact on the health care system is a subject of intense interest among policymakers. Now a new study has found that, in contrast to the notion that "once a super-utilizer, always a super-utilizer," many patients who use healthcare services intensely do so for a relatively brief period of time.

Elderly, ambulatory surgery patients at greater risk for readmissions
FierceHealthcare
Patients 65 and older who have ambulatory surgery are more likely to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days than younger patients, regardless of their health before surgery, reports a new, large national Northwestern Medicine study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Though not as strong determinants as age, current health conditions, such as chronic pulmonary disease and diabetes mellitus, as well as patient history, were also associated with greater likelihood of unanticipated readmissions.

Study: Telephone therapy helps older people in underserved rural areas
Kaiser Health News
Therapy provided over the phone lowered symptoms of anxiety and depression among older adults in rural areas with a lack of mental health services, a new study shows. The option is important, one expert said, because seniors often have increased need for treatment as they cope with the effects of disease and the emotional tolls of aging and loss.

Uninsured rate dips below 10 percent
Modern Healthcare
The percentage of uninsured people in the U.S. dropped below 10 percent this year for the first time, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey released recently. The national uninsured rate decreased to 9.2 percent in the first three months of 2015 from 11.5 percent a year earlier as 7 million people gained insurance, according to the survey, conducted by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. The reduction is not as big as the drop from 2013 to 2014, when 8.8 million people gained coverage.

Proposed insurance consolidations raise concerns
AHA News Now
Anthem's proposed acquisition of Cigna and Aetna's proposed acquisition of Humana have "the very real potential" to substantially reduce competition and the insurers' willingness to partner with healthcare providers and consumers in transforming care, the AHA told the Department of Justice in a recent letter. "These transactions will combine four of the five national health insurance companies, with effectively no possibility that existing firms could replicate their size and scope," noted Mindy Hatton, the AHA's senior vice president and general counsel.
