ACMA position statement calls for ACM certification by end of 2016
ACMA
On Oct. 21, 2013, ACMA released its new Standards of Practice and Scope of Services for Health Care Delivery System Case Management and Transitions of Care (TOC) Professionals.

The new Standards of Practice and Scope of Services include some notable revisions and additions designed to address recent developments in health care and ensure practitioners are well-positioned to respond to those changes yet-to-come. Among these changes is the introduction of ACMA's case management certification position statement. In 2012, ACMA surveyed its members and ACM-certified professionals and asked them to share their thoughts on case management certification and the qualifications to perform case management functions. Based on the survey results, ACMA developed a position statement designed to: (a.) ensure case management functions are performed by clinically competent professionals; (b.) position case management professionals for growth and professional advancement opportunities; and (c.) gain recognition for case management in the health care delivery system setting and advance the practice.

According to ACMA's certification position statement, "Nurses and social workers with two or more years of health care system experience should have their Accredited Case Manager (ACM) credential by Dec. 31, 2016, to practice health care system case management. Thereafter, because new case managers need 24 months of health care system case management experience to be eligible to take the ACM exam, certification should be achieved by the 36th month of practice."

The Standards and Scope are available online, free of charge to all health care professionals. To download the Standards and Scope, go to www.acmaweb.org/standards.

Are you ACM-certified? Apply now at www.acmaweb.org/ACM.

Bioengineers develop 3-D brain tissue model
PNAS
Scientists at Tufts University have created a three-dimensional brain tissue model that imitates brain function, a revolutionary tool that could be used to study the effects of illness, trauma and treatments on the brain. The model is a spongy, round scaffold made of silk proteins, a collagen-based gel and rat neurons. "They've been able to repeat the highest level of function of neurons. It's the best model I've seen," said nanoscience technology expert James Hickman. Details of the study appear in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The New York Times (tiered subscription model).

Health systems form long-distance relationships for better care
Capital New York
North Shore-L.I.J. Health System in New York is among those partnering with Ohio-based Cleveland Clinic for cardiac care. The long-distance partnership is part of a national trend in which health systems collaborate over long distances in one area of specialization such as cardiology or orthopedics. The partnerships allow for the sharing of research, protocols and best practices in an effort to improve outcomes, and they enable national, self-insured employers to negotiate prices with specific health systems.
