American Fitness Index Makes Big News
ACSM announced its eighth annual American Fitness Index (AFI) rankings last week. Washington, DC, claimed the top for the second year in a row. View the rankings and individual metro data here or in the chart below.

With funding from the Anthem Foundation, The AFI data report measures the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the United States and provides a score and ranking reflecting a composite of preventive health behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions, health care access, and community resources and policies that support physical activity. Included in the report are benchmarks for each data indicator to highlight areas that need improvement.

As a global leader in exercise science and sports medicine, ACSM uses its research expertise to provide the AFI report as a reliable measure of community fitness for the country’s 50 largest metropolitan areas. The report serves as a scientific, objective assessment of each city’s strengths and challenges, and effectively informs local decision-making that can enhance the quality of life for its population.

It is heartening to see a city’s health improve over the years, and this year we see some remarkable shifts in rankings. Nine metro areas improved by five or more rankings—Cleveland, Kansas City and St. Louis saw the biggest leaps when comparing to last year. Las Vegas, where findings from AFI resulted in the expansion of a city coalition to drive health improvement efforts, also jumped significantly in the rankings.

Several major media outlets covered the AFI rankings release over the past week, including USA Today, Washington Post, NPR, Huffington Post, CNN, US News and World Report, TIME and many more city-based media outlets.

Sports Medicine Bulletin Survey Question:

In what city and state was the Founding Meeting of ACSM held?

Correct answer: C. New York

The Founding Meeting was scheduled in the Boston Room of the Hotel Statler. The initial turnout was anticipated to be small, but the meeting filled up so quickly and overflowed into the hallway, so the meeting had to be moved into the ballroom at the Hotel Statler.
