Policy Corner: Pivarnik Advocates for PA in Health Reform ACSM President-elect Tom President Obama took center stage Sept. 9, addressing the nation and a rare joint session of Congress in an effort to move forward with health reform. The President focused on access to health insurance and ending such practices as denial of coverage based on pre-existing conditions and dropping coverage after illness strikes. He spoke in favor of a government-run "public" option but indicated he’s open to other scenarios, and he reached out to Republicans who favor medical tort reform. Missing from the President’s remarks was any mention of physical activity and healthy lifestyles, with all their proven power to prevent chronic diseases and engender cost savings. Advocates for physical activity and exercise swung into action, responding to an ACSM Action Alert and urging Congress and the White House to emphasize healthy lifestyles in health reform legislation. ACSM President James Pivarnik, Ph.D., FACSM, sent President Obama a letter stressing the benefits of physical activity and introducing the principles of Exercise is Medicine™.

In an important development, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) revealed a framework document outlining his vision for health reform. Baucus’ proposal follows intense negotiations among a bi-partisan panel of six senators and could represent a path to consensus in that chamber. ACSM leaders, members/advocates and policy staff will continue to press for appropriate language regarding physical activity and exercise in whatever health reform legislation goes to the President for signature.
