New Alberta plant will produce renewable diesel and jet fuel

Edmonton-based SBI BioEnergy, Inc. broke ground on recently for a $10 million mini-refinery in Edmonton Industrial Park that would turn fats and grease into renewable diesel and jet fuel. Incorporated in 1998, SBI Bioenergy Inc. is an Alberta company that has had great success in developing world-class environment-friendly renewable energy technologies.

TransAlta is planning to store energy at wind farm using fridge-sized batteries from electric-carmaker Tesla

Dan Chapman wants to put a fridge-sized battery in an apartment building and fill it up with electricity from solar panels on the roof so that at night, there's plenty of power. Or, a grocery store could lower its power bill by using the super-size battery to store power at night when the price is low and use it in the daytime when electricity rates on the grid soar too high.

Power consumption record set as temperature soars in Alberta

The recent soaring afternoon heat resulted in Albertans setting a new summertime record for power consumption. As of 5 p.m., 10,520 megawatts of electricity was used in the province, according to the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO). A new record is usually set every summer as Alberta's population increases. Summer peak demand was previously set at 10,419 MW on July 30 last year, AESO says. In the last three years the peak was reached in late July.

Energy storage technology research projects get $1.5 million funding

A total of $1.5 million in funding is being provided to six new energy storage projects in Alberta that are intended to help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the deployment of renewable energy. The funding is being provided by Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions (AI-EES). The AI-EES says it received over 50 proposals and its advisors chose the technologies with the greatest potential for implementation to Alberta's power grid.

Shell to pay into carbon capture safety fund, but critics worry price is too low

Shell Canada will soon begin paying into a fund established to protect Albertans from potential leaks from carbon capture and storage operations, but critics worry the amount collected won't cover the liability. Alberta Energy spokesman Chris Bourdeau said recently that Shell will be required to pay a per-tonne rate for all of the carbon dioxide it injects underground when it launches its Quest project.

IKEA Canada installing electric vehicle charging stations

IKEA Canada has become the latest retailer to position itself on the green side of motoring, announcing recently that it is installing free charging stations for electric vehicles at all of its stores in Canada. The global home furnishing retailer is partnering with Sun Country Highway to install two 60-amp charging stations at each of its 12 locations across the country. IKEA already offers the service in 18 other countries.
