A national leader in solar power, New York is encouraging its residents to install solar powered water heating systems in their homes. Government officials hope the thermal incentive program will spur homeowners and businesses to install the energy efficient plumbing systems. According to the Solar Home & Business Journal, under the terms of the program - a five-year, $25 million effort - the state will dole out incentives of up to $4,000 for residences and $25,000 for non-residences to switch from electrically heated hot-water systems to solar powered ones. Following the recent Tesco store CO2 blast, trade body FETA has hit out at the supermarket's adoption of natural refrigerants and the green groups that encouraged them, claiming that the rush towards CO2 technology has compromised safety. Cedric Sloan, FETA director general, suggested that some green groups have effectively coerced supermarkets into moving to natural refrigerants before industry approved formal training for designers and contractors was available, referring to 'the excessive and less than impartial campaign' by NGOs to replace HFC-based systems rapidly.
