North American HVACR sales climb 20 percent in November Modern Distribution Management Share    
North American HVACR average distributor sales for November 2010 increased more than 20 percent versus November 2009, according to the Monthly Targeted and Regional Economic News for Distribution Strategies Report released by Heating, Air conditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International (HARDI). The running 12 month sales improved for the fourth consecutive month, nearing the top end of HARDI's projections for 2010 growth of 5 to 10 percent. More

U.S. shipments of residential gas water heaters for November 2010 decreased 6 percent, to 295,029 units, down from 313,524 units shipped in November 2009. Residential electric water heater shipments decreased 3 percent in November 2010, to 281,702 units, down from 290,691 units shipped in November 2009. For the year-to-date, U.S. shipments of residential gas water heaters increased 5 percent, to 3,567,601 units, compared to 3,403,025 units shipped during the same period in 2009. Residential electric water heater shipments decreased 0.2 percent year-to-date, to 3,408,299 units, compared to 3,415,924 units shipped during the same period in 2009. More

The HVAC industry got a Christmas gift from the federal government in late 2010, when those energy efficiency tax credits were approved for one more year - although at the lower level of $500. Contractors have been using the credits to help give replacements and upgrades a quicker payback. "While we are happy to see the 25c tax credits extended for 2011, we were disappointed by the substantial reductions to their value and changes to the minimum standards for some of the qualifying equipment," said Charles McCrudden, vice president of government relations for the Air Conditioning Contractors of America. China met a five-year target to improve energy efficiency by cutting power to industry and imposing rolling blackouts, even though a massive economic stimulus increased energy use. Energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product was reduced by 20 percent from 2005 levels by the end of 2010, said Zhang Ping, chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it has selected 24 states to receive a total of $7 million to support the adoption of updated, energy-efficient building codes. DOE said the funding will expand the existing partnerships between states and the federal government and help states to more rapidly adopt new residential and commercial building codes, as well increase compliance with those codes. With more than 1,900 exhibiting companies already reserving 374,000-plus square feet of booth space at the International Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo), the show is poised to be the largest Western-based one yet when it runs Jan. 31 - Feb. 2 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. In 2004, the previous largest AHR Expo that was held in the West was in Anaheim, Calif., but this year's event is 15 percent bigger, so far. provide onsite power heating and cooling is not a decision to take lightly, but supermarkets who take the plunge could benefit from significant gains in emissions and energy reduction, according to research from Brunel University and collaborators. A 15-strong consortium has been undertaking a five year research project, funded by a significant Defra grant, into the economic, engineering and environmental factors involved in integrating a tri-generation system as part of a supermarket.
