The State of the Union recap: Energy and environment
International Business Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
President Barack Obama's the State of the Union speech on Jan. 25 avoided any toxic references to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions, says Robert W. Baird. The president's call for 80 percent of electricity in 2035 to be sourced from 'clean energy' - including coal and nuclear - is an obvious move toward the center. However, a Clean Energy Standard needs funding, as does Obama's plan for biofuels and electric vehicles. Predictably, Obama fingered elimination of tax preferences for conventional energy to pay for it. More

Administration seeking momentum for clean energy standard
Climate Wire via The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
President Obama and key members of the administration fanned the nation to promote his plans to expand clean energy initiatives, moving quickly to build momentum behind a key agenda item pitched to a national audience on Jan. 25. The effort contrasts with Obama's previous low-key approach, when Senate Democrats were struggling to advance climate legislation that collapsed before midterm elections. Obama now is rallying workers in solar and wind plants and using campaign-style appearances to underscore the urgency around a clean energy standard. More

Energy efficiency is major force in HVAC: Appliance market research reports
Appliance Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are the biggest user of energy in the average home, making energy efficiency high on consumers' priority lists. This leads to increased interest in non-standard methods of heating and cooling the home, according to Appliance Market Research Reports, U.S. Appliance Industry Manufacturing Focus 2011: HVAC. AHRI submits comments to California Energy Commission on proposed refrigerant charge measurement procedure
AHRI    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The California Energy Commission (CEC), with the assistance of the Statewide Investor Owned Utilities, developed a winter setup for a charge measurement procedure associated with air conditioners and heat pumps as part of revisions to Title 24. The proposed procedure creates conditions at temperatures below 55 degrees that allow the system to operate in the same range of pressure differences between the low side pressure and the high side pressure, as it does during warm outdoor temperature operating conditions. BREEAM credits penalize heat pump technology
Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The BREEAM system for measuring the environmental sustainability of a building is now considered to be the world's leading building assessment program. Under this system, air-source heat pumps should score highly, as they use renewable heat and are more energy and carbon-efficient than systems that use conventional fossil fuels. Indeed, by using the latest heat pump technology with integrated heat recovery equipment, the number of credits received will be increased. But there is a contradiction in the way heat pumps are assessed. More

Smart grid likely to spur huge increase in quantity of utility data
Renew Grid    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
According to a new report from Lux Research, global smart grid initiatives will result in a 900 percent increase over the next decade in the quantity of data that utilities will need to communicate, manage and analyze. "Many people think 'smart meters' when you talk about the smart grid, because meters will generate most of the new data," says Steve Minnihan, a researcher for Lux Research and the report's lead author. "But the volume of data generated isn't the only factor fueling growth in the smart grid market." More

Congress and Obama: Good prospects for US trade in 2011
Bellingham Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As he discussed his plans to work with Republicans in 2011, President Obama highlighted the importance of exports, innovation, competitiveness and the need to achieve the possible rather than the ideal in creating jobs and boosting economic growth. The perfect is the enemy of the good, particularly in politics. This opens important policy prospects related to international trade and manufacturing. Now, the president has the opportunity to work with the new Congress to take quick action and achieve the kind of dramatic results he outlined in his National Export Initiative and his Strategy for American Innovation earlier in his term. 2011 may prove to be a dynamic year for U.S. international trade and competitiveness prospects. Can HVAC win on Capitol Hill?
ACHR News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's a new year, and there's a crowd of newly sworn-in representatives and senators working on Capitol Hill. What Congress does this year will probably have an impact on HVAC businesses, so the industry will keep close tabs on the legislators. The focus on the national deficit and how to cut spending is expected to factor into many legislative actions this year, including climate change and energy policies. This is one of the reasons why last year's Home Star legislation, which passed the House but not the Senate, is not expected to be successful in 2011. More

Manufacturing mood brightens substantially

article
The mood of U.S. industrial companies has brightened substantially, thanks to the strength of markets both at home and abroad. Looking forward to the next 12 months, 63 percent of manufacturers interviewed by PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP during the fourth quarter said they are optimistic about prospects for the U.S. economy - up 28 points from the 35 percent who felt that way in the third quarter. The survey is based on interviews with 62 executives of large multinational companies. Only 7 percent of respondents were pessimistic about the U.S. outlook, while 30 percent are uncertain. More

There will be 9 times the smart grid data by 2020
GigaOM    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Utilities are going to have to manage nine times the data they do today if they want to adapt to the smart grid. It's a fact that will drive telecommunications and information technology investment in the grid from $12.8 billion today to $32.4 billion by 2020. That data is from Lux Research's latest report on the smart grid, and it underscores what the industry's known for a long time. In less than a decade there will be millions of smart meters delivering daily and hourly updates, distribution sensors and controls demanding split-second decisions, and back-office analytics to churn all that data into dollars and cents. And utilities are just starting to invest in this technology. More

Energy-efficient HVAC a major investment focus
Construction Week Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Although the primary purpose of HVAC systems in commercial buildings is occupant productivity, a new report from Pike Research on the U.S. market finds that the aim of most changes to HVAC systems in the next five years will be to decrease energy cost. According to the study, due to rising energy prices and the drive to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with building operations, many building owners have begun to manage energy cost as an asset, rather than a fixed cost. The tools for improving efficiency of HVAC systems are multiplying, including building energy management systems (BEMS), on-site ice-based thermal energy storage systems, under-floor air distribution and chilled beams, to name a few. US factory sector expanded more than thought in December-ISM
Reuters via ForexYard    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
U.S. manufacturing grew more briskly than previously thought in December, according to revised data released by an industry group recently. The Institute for Supply Management said its index of national factory activity was 58.5, compared with the 57.0 reading it originally reported. This makes it the highest level for the index since April 2010. The index's employment component was also revised higher to 58.9 from 55.7. More

Electricity suppliers should prepare for heat pump demand
Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Air source heat pump (ASHP) installers should consult with electricity distribution network operators (DNOs) before fitting the technology. Furthermore, manufacturers should take an active role in understanding the network implications of their equipment. These are the findings of a report commissioned by the Department of Energy and Climate Change to assess the implications of ASHPs on the domestic network infrastructure. More
