How will the global economy react to the crisis in Japan?
The Associated Press via Manufacturing Business Technology    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Japan's earthquake and nuclear crisis have put pressure on the already fragile global economy, squeezed supplies of goods from computer chips to auto parts and raised fears of higher interest rates. The disaster frightened financial markets in Tokyo and on Wall Street. Japan's Nikkei average lost 10 percent, and the Dow Jones industrials fell so quickly after the opening bell that the stock exchange invoked a special rule to reduce volatility. More

Locking caps fitted to stop refrigerant inhalation
Refrigeration & Air Conditioning    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Locking caps are being fitted on home air conditioning systems to deter young people from inhaling the refrigerant through the service valve. Federal Reserve: US economy on 'firmer footing'
The Associated Press via Manufacturing Business Technology    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Federal Reserve expressed more confidence in the U.S. economy even as Japan's nuclear crisis raised worries around the globe. The Fed said the economic recovery is on "firmer footing" and the jobs market is "improving gradually," in a statement released after its meeting recently. That's a more upbeat tone from its previous meeting on Jan. 26. After that meeting, Fed policymakers said the rate of economic activity was "insufficient" to bring about "significant improvement" in the job market. More

Industrial production grows for sixth straight month
The Associated Press via Manufacturing Business Technology    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Factories likely produced more goods in February in response to greater consumer demand, boosting industrial production for the sixth straight month. Economists surveyed by FactSet expect output at the nation's factories, mines and utilities rose 0.6 percent last month. That would mark the biggest increase since December. Overall industrial production dipped 0.1 percent in January, the first decline in 19 months. But that mostly reflected a decline in utilities following an unseasonably cold December. More

RHI provides spur for absorption and adsorption chillers
Refrigeration & Air Conditioning    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One part of the cooling industry will benefit from the RHI, as the government has ruled cooling from absorption and adsorption chillers as eligible for payments. The Department for Energy and Climate Change said: "Heat used for cooling counts towards the renewables targets under the Renewable Energy Directive and therefore, provided it meets all other eligibility criteria, it will be eligible for RHI support. Heat can be used to provide cooling through absorption chillers; this is quite common practice in commercial and industrial uses. Therefore, cooling delivered in this way will be supported under the RHI." More
