World market for air conditioning up 13 percent
ACR News
Share

While the Euro crisis continues to affect the air conditioning market here, worldwide sales were up 13 percent last year, according to a new report from BSRIA.
The world market for air conditioning increased from $78 billion in 2010 to $88.2 billion in 2011, Europe struggled to recover, although sales of all splits were up last year. Chiller sales are down though there is an increasing AHU market, says the report, due to a need for more ventilation under EU building regulations requiring increased air tightness. Sales of AHU with heat recovery are also increasing.

Nanocrystal-coated fibers might reduce wasted energy
R&D

Researchers are developing a technique that uses nanotechnology to harvest energy from hot pipes or engine components to potentially recover energy wasted in factories, power plants and cars.
"The ugly truth is that 58 percent of the energy generated in the United States is wasted as heat," said Yue Wu, a Purdue University assistant professor of chemical engineering. "If we could get just 10 percent back that would allow us to reduce energy consumption and power plant emissions considerably."

Large U.S. manufacturers are much more likely than their smaller peers to move production to the United States from China, according to a survey.
Labor costs and the quality of goods are the top reasons for companies to consider so-called "re-shoring," with some companies considering the United States a de facto low-cost country because of its high unemployment, according to the survey by the Boston Consulting Group.

Senate Republicans rejected the White House-backed "Buffett Rule" aimed at hiking tax rates on millionaires, a move both sides will use as campaign benchmarks ahead of the November election.
President Obama had spent much of the past week pushing the "Paying a Fair Share Act," arguing its mandate of a minimum tax rate of 30 percent for people making more than $1 million would help bring a level of fairness to the tax code as working-class Americans struggle with economic hardship.

4 lessons from the US manufacturing revival
U.S. News & World Report

If you haven't noticed a "Made in the USA" label recently, keep your eyes open: It's on its way back.
Over the last two decades, thousands of U.S. manufacturers have set up overseas operations meant to take advantage of cheap foreign labor and permissive regulations. The offshoring trend has eliminated millions of American jobs and generated a lot of political pressure for new policies that protect the ones that are still available. President Obama has made a stronger manufacturing sector the centerpiece of his proposal for "an economy built to last."
