Recently, USTR released the Interim Report to Leaders from the Co-Chairs from the EU-U.S. High Level Working Group on Jobs and Growth. Manufacturers welcome this step forward and the findings in the report which reflects many of the recommendations laid out by the National Association of Manufacturers earlier this year. This is an important step on the way to initiating the negotiation of a free trade agreement between the EU and United States. More

2014 World Cup will have $20 million sustainability budget

FIFA has said it will spend $20 million to make the 2014 World Cup in Brazil the first with a comprehensive sustainability strategy. It will include "green" stadiums, waste management, community support, reducing and offsetting carbon emissions, renewable energy, climate change and capacity development, according to FIFA and the Local Organizing Committee, which will develop the sustainability strategy over the next two years. Energy efficiency for California buildings

The California Energy Commission has passed new energy efficiency standards aimed at reducing energy costs for new homes and commercial buildings. The CEC says that energy savings over the next 30 years under the new rules, approved by a 4-0 vote, would be equal to the output of six modern natural-gas-fired power plants, saving enough electricity to run 1.7 million homes. Business activity across the euro zone shrank for a fifth straight month in June and Chinese manufacturing contracted, while weaker overseas demand slowed U.S. factory growth, surveys showed recently. The data darkened the outlook for the world economy, adding to fears that Europe's debt crisis and slower growth in the United States and Asia would cause downturns around the globe. More

Chinese manufacturing activity hit a seven-month low in June, data from HSBC showed recently, putting pressure on Beijing to do more to boost the world's second-largest economy. Global markets fell after the Federal Reserve balked at providing major new stimulus to the U.S. economy, while key surveys showed manufacturing activity continued to contract in both China and Europe, raising concern over the outlook for the world economy. At the end of a two-day policy meeting recently, the Fed said it was extending a program called Operation Twist, under which the Fed swaps short-term bonds for longer-term ones to help keep long-term interest rates low.
