HARDI report: All regions showed growth in August

Heating, Airconditioning and Refrigeration Distributors International announced North American HVACR average distributor sales for August 2011 up 7.9 percent from the same month last year, an improvement from last month's 4.9 percent growth, but not enough to stem a sixth-month decline in the annual distributor growth rate. The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute received the "Super Nova of Energy Efficiency" award from the Alliance to Save Energy on Oct. 4, 2011, during the Dinner with the Stars of Energy Efficiency awards gala in Washington, D.C. The award was given in recognition of the work by AHRI members and staff in negotiating a consensus agreement that would, for the first time, establish efficiency standards for furnaces, heat pumps, and central air-conditioners based on the region of the country. Manufacturing sector still growing, report shows

A monthly manufacturing survey from the Institute for Supply Management released recently shows the factory sector is still growing, albeit modestly. The ISM's U.S. manufacturing ISM index showed a reading of 51.6 for September, coming in above expectations after a reading of 50.6 in August. A reading above 50 indicates growth in the sector. More

Market share for Energy Star qualified new homes reaches 25 percent

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that 25 percent of all single-family homes built nationally in 2010 earned EPA's Energy Star, up from 21 percent in 2009. Since 1995 approximately 1.2 million new homes have earned EPA's Energy Star, representing savings of nearly $350 million on utility bills while avoiding greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from more than 450,000 vehicles, said the agency. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has launched a new website aimed at helping consumers find 'green' appliances and electronic goods and manufacturers improve their products. The online tool allows consumers to find home appliances and electronic goods that have earned the EPA's Energy Star label, as well as WaterSense-designated products that save energy and water. More

House Committee clears path for free trade agreements

The House Ways & Means Committee marked up legislation for the pending trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea recently. This is the opening act of the closing chapter, so to speak, and we hope it will not be too long before President Obama is signing the agreements into law. Next up - the House will vote on the three agreements on Oct. 12 and send them to the Senate. Senator Reid has promised rapid action over on his side of the Capitol once he receives the bills. More
