Central air conditioner shipments were up sharply in August, reports AHRI

United States shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps totaled 517,864 units in August 2011, up 18 percent from 439,551 units shipped in August 2010, according to Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute shipment data. U.S. shipments of central air conditioners increased 24 percent, to 371,157 units, up from 300,046 units shipped in August 2010. U.S. shipments of air-source heat pumps increased 5
percent, to 146,707 units, up from 139,505 units shipped in August 2010.

The recent introduction of efficiency standards into the GCC by its governments could cause more problems than it solves, a leading HVAC industry expert has warned.
Stephen Yurek, president and CEO of the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute, said that the increased competition between GCC member countries to have a strong energy efficient code could end up costing consumers in the long run.

In a recent column in the New York Times, Steve Rattner makes a case for building our future economic prosperity on the services sector. Apart from the somewhat perplexing irony of a former auto czar and captain of Wall Street throwing in the towel on manufacturing, his arguments could contribute to a self-fulfilling prophecy of an admittedly widespread view. There is a more positive economic and political case to be made that,
instead of accepting a slow decline, we put our shoulder to the wheel and build on the apparently hidden but obvious strengths of U.S. manufacturing.
