The U.S. Federal Reserve resisted pressure to set specific growth targets as it kept policy on hold recently, saying that the economy had "strengthened somewhat" in the third quarter.
Describing the economy as ever-so-slowly-improving, the Fed noted that growth remains lackluster and tumult in global financial markets poses significant risks.

Homeowners need to complete an average of four energy efficiency upgrades, such as insulation or
high-efficiency windows, to see their utility bills decrease, according to a new survey released recently. Homeowners who completed only 2.3 improvements actually saw their bills increase 10 percent to 30 percent, according to the 2011 Energy Pulse Survey by the Shelton Group, a Tennessee-based marketing group focused on sustainability that polled 1,502 Americans.

US manufacturing output slowed in October

The U.S. manufacturing sector expanded in October but at a slower pace than the prior month, according to a closely watched index released recently in the newest sign of a stalled economy.
The Institute of Supply Management said its purchasing managers index registered 50.8 percent, down from September's reading of 51.6 percent.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm business labor productivity rose 3.1 percent in the third quarter, with unit labor costs falling 2.4
percent. (All percentages are in annual rates of growth.) For manufacturers, we saw a return to healthy 5.4 percent jump in productivity. For durable goods industries, the increase was even larger at 9.9 percent.

Manufacturers expand in Chicago and Dallas

Two surveys released recently show expansion in the economy, with one of them rebounding from past contractions while the other finds manufacturers growing rapidly in its region.
The Texas
Manufacturing Outlook Survey from the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank found that the current economic environment improved in October after five months of contracting sentiment. The index for general business conditions rose from -14.4 in September to +2.3 in October. Despite the more pessimistic opinion of the economy by respondents, measures of new orders, production and employment did not contract in recent months (although they did dip lower).

The U.S. Department of Energy has adopted new Federal energy conservation standard levels for residential central air conditioners and heat pumps that will apply as of January 2015. Following a public comment period until mid October, the United States Department of Energy reaffirmed efficiency standards for residential furnaces, central air conditioners and heat pumps that are manufactured in or imported into the United States at
the levels already established by a June 2011 direct final rule.

Massachusetts recently was ranked the most energy−efficient state in the country by the American Council for an Energy−Efficient Economy, due in large part to recent state energy policies. The ACEEE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting energy efficiency as a means of increasing economic prosperity, and the council each year ranks states' energy efficiency in six different policy areas through its State

In a survey of more than 1,000 International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition exhibitors, HVACR manufacturers expressed optimism about the economic outlook for 2012. Nearly three fourths (72 percent) of the total respondents expect a better year (59 percent) or a much better year (13 percent) in 2012 compared to 2011. Twenty four percent replied that sales would be the same, while only 4 percent are expecting a
worse year.
