The association that represents consumer product companies serving military commissaries and exchanges is throwing its support behind Department of Defense initiatives to promote a healthy force.

"We will be working with the military resale agencies and major consumer products companies to hold healthy food demonstrations and sales that promote healthy products offering coupons and discounts."

The American Logistics Association will work with the military commissary and exchange systems to promote events that highlight healthy products and a healthy lifestyle for military personnel, particularly at the 13 bases that DoD has identified to prototype the initiative. The Healthy Base Initiative is an effort by the Department of Defense in concert with the White House, industry, medical communities, and participating installations.

Report: Restaurants expected to lose market share to retail meals

Home meal replacements or prepared foods from supermarkets, drug stores and other retail outlets will continue to capture share of the meal/snacks market by stealing visits from restaurants, according to The NPD Group. NPD's recent foodservice forecast through 2022 indicates that instances of prepared food purchased at retailers for at-home consumption will increase by 10 percent over the next decade compared to a 4 percent increase forecast for commercial foodservice traffic.

Family Dollar gains market share, but profit suffers

Retailers form Bangladesh worker safety alliance

Close to 20 U.S. and Canadian retailers recently announced the formation of a new organization and safety plan intended to protect garment workers in Bangladesh, saying incidents such as the factory collapse that killed more than 1,100 workers this spring cannot be allowed to happen again. "The safety record of Bangladeshi factories is unacceptable and requires our collective effort," CEOs of the participating companies said in a joint statement. "We can prevent future tragedies by consolidating and amplifying our individual efforts to bring about real and sustained progress."

Veterans Canteen Service sponsors National Veterans Wheelchair Games

Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) announced that the Veterans Canteen Service served as a Platinum Sponsor for the upcoming 33rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games, that was held in Tampa, Fl., on July 13–18. "Without the support of sponsors like the VA's Veterans Canteen Service, putting on an event as large as the Wheelchair Games wouldn't be possible," said Bill Lawson, national president of Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Garrison using vacated AAFES facilities to improve post
Belvoir Eagle
The Directorate of Public Works is planning to renovate or demolish buildings on South Post that once belonged to the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. The projects will provide the installation with a Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles office, administrative offices and potentially a sit-down restaurant. The start and completion dates for the work depends upon funding availability but some projects could start as soon as the fall of 2013.
