Navy changes on-base sales of alcohol

From Feb. 1: The Navy's top admiral has ordered a series of changes to the way the service sells booze. Chief among them, the Navy will stop selling liquor at its minimarts and prohibit the sale at any of its stores from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

15-item comparison offers glimpse of prices at area stores

From Feb. 1: Rose L Thayer writes, "I'll admit, I was a skeptic on the savings the commissary provides. I thought off-post stores would take the edge over the commissary, because while each offers its own off-brand, the commissary only sells name-brand products. As the Washington Post wrote, the commissary is "stocked with seemingly every brand of every food product available in America." And it is true; the commissary offers the same variety of brands of ketchup as Walmart — five to be specific — but could the discount of the Great Value store brand be enough to pull civilian stores into the lead for budget shopping?

Hawaii's commissaries are found as 'most valuable' in world
U.S. Army
From Feb. 1: The latest formal Price Comparison Study, issued by the Defense Commissary Agency in June, reports Hawaii's commissaries lead the world in customer savings. Hawaii commissary shoppers are the beneficiaries, saving a whopping 49.3 percent compared to those who shop at Hawaii's commercial supermarkets, according to the research.

Army to cut its forces by 80,000 in 5 years

From Feb. 1: Gen. Ray Odierno, the Army chief of staff, recently said that the Army would institute the largest organizational change since World War II by eliminating combat forces from 10 bases across the United States, part of a planned reduction of 80,000 active-duty troops over the next five years.
