10. Premiers agree on principles and vision for Canadian Energy Strategy

From September 4, 2014: Premiers discussed the Canadian Energy Strategy (CES). British Columbia joined the initiative in November 2013. Quebec is now also a full partner in this initiative. Premiers are pleased that all provinces and territories are now participating in the development of the Strategy. In order to ensure the interests of all governments are accommodated in the CES, the Premiers agreed to some improvements in the CES Vision and Principles that were agreed to in 2013.

9. Ministry releases decision on Renewable Energy on Crown Land Policy

From March 13, 2014: Approximately 87 per cent of Ontario is Crown land, including lands covered by water. The Ministry has developed specific policies and procedures to ensure the effective management of Ontario's Crown land for proposed renewable energy development. On February 10, 2014 the Ministry released the Renewable Energy on Crown Land Policy. A decision notice has been posted to Ontario's Environmental Registry (# 011-6005). The policy modernizes how the Ministry will consider access to Crown land for use in potential renewable energy projects including water, onshore wind, and solar power.

7. OPG releases performance report

From September 18, 2014: OPG is continuing its transition as a clean, efficient and financially sustainable organization. With the closure of its last coal burning unit in April, OPG became a generator virtually free of emissions that contribute to smog or climate change.

6. Ontario approves Veresen 40 MW project

From October 23, 2014: Ontario has approved Veresen Inc.’s 40MW Grand Valley III project, leaving the Canadian energy company’s wind capacity set to more than quadruple over the next three years.

5. New Board members appointed to OPG and Hydro One

From May 1, 2014: Ontario has announced the following appointments and re-appointments to the board of directors for both Ontario Power Generation and Hydro One:

Ontario Power Generation

Elisabeth (Lisa) DeMarco is a partner at Norton Rose Fulbright Canada, LLP and Head of the Toronto Energy, Sustainability and Climate Change International Business Group. She also has experience as a lawyer in the public sector and is a member of the board of directors of the Ontario Energy Association and the Toronto Atmospheric Fund Investment Committee.

Brendan Hawley runs a consulting firm that specializes in advocacy communications. He has worked on issues related to energy, innovation and health care policy for a variety of public and private clients.

4. Report: Australia faces unprecedented oversupply of energy

From August 14, 2014: South-eastern Australia will not need to ramp up energy generation for the next 10 years, even under a worst-case scenario, a report says. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) report says Australia is facing an energy glut never before seen in the history of the national electricity market.

3. Utilities prepare for future of change

From July 3, 2014: According to credible experts the electric power industry is about to see major restructuring. No one knows how widespread it will be or how quickly it will take over, but in all likelihood big change is already underway. Some experts are warning of major threats to the viability of existing utilities while others are saying it’s a huge opportunity and market participants should waste no time preparing to make the most of the new reality. Although the most dramatic change is expected in certain regions of the US, Canadians will likely see side effects and moderate versions of the same disruptions.

2. Ontario appoints new CEO, Board of Directors to lead energy agency merger

From November 6, 2014: Ontario intends to appoint Bruce Campbell as CEO of the new Independent Electricity System Operator as the government moves ahead with the merger of the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). Amalgamating the agencies will streamline electricity sector planning by reducing overlap and is expected to save millions of dollars going forward.

1. OPA's final recommendations on development of new process to procure large renewable energy projects

From March 20, 2014: The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) submitted a report to the Minister of Energy that included the OPA's final recommendations on the development of a new process to procure large renewable energy projects. See the LRP Final Recommendations Report. The report builds on the OPA's interim recommendations, provided to the Minister on August 30, 2013, and summarizes the results of the OPA's additional work on the Large Renewable Procurement (LRP) program and the feedback received through community engagement activities from December 2013 to February 2014. The report is currently with the Minister of Energy for review and consideration. The OPA plans to host an additional webinar at a later date to discuss the transmission capacity availability for LRP and to answer questions.
