Ontario to implement cap-and-trade system

As recently reported to the Globe and Mail newspaper by government sources, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is preparing to implement a cap-and-trade system for greenhouse gas emissions as part of the Province's strategy to combat climate change. The initiative would be tied to Quebec and California's existing cap-and-trade system, which held its first joint auction of greenhouse gas allowances in December, 2014, and its second in March, 2015.

Rate design for electricity distributors

As part of the Renewed Regulatory Framework in Electricity, the Board indicated that the revenue decoupling consultation would move forward. The Board believes that distributors should have a rate design that provides greater stability for the consumer and sends a price signal to consumers that links use to cost drivers.

Cap Gemini Ernst & Young Canada Inc. (CGE&Y) and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) continue to innovate in the outsourcing of Information Technology (IT) services within the energy sector as Business Transformation Services Inc. (BTS), a wholly owned subsidiary of CGE&Y, purchases OPG's 49 per cent share of New Horizon System Solutions LP (NHSS). The new agreement finalizes a nine-year, nearly $1 billion service contract that continues to benefit all concerned.

Ontario gives northern industry permanent relief from energy costs

A program that reduces energy costs for northern industries — like mining and forestry — will carry on indefinitely, the Ontario government says. Speaking at a news conference at Resolute Forest Products' Thunder Bay pulp mill, Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle told reporters that Ontario would commit up to $120 million a year permanently to the Northern Industrial Electricity Rate Program, which was to expire in March of 2016.

New report urges provincial governments to adopt carbon pricing policies

Canadian investment in renewable energy up 8 per cent in 2014

A United Nations-sponsored report says Canada remained among the top 10 countries in the world for investment in renewable energy last year. The annual report released this morning found global investment in renewable energies, not including hydro-electric power, climbed 17 per cent in 2014 to around US$270 billion. The increase marked a global rebound after two years in which renewable energy investment shrank from its all-time high in 2011.

New offshore wind energy farm aims for Hawaii trifecta
