Ontario Minister of Energy issues new directive on procurements
Recently, Ontario's Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli issued a directive to the Independent Electricity System Operator ("IESO") regarding procurement of electricity products contemplated in the province's latest Long-Term Energy Plan (the "LTEP") which was released on Dec. 2, 2013. It is the latest in a series of directives that the Minister has issued to the IESO and its predecessor the Ontario Power Authority.

Ontario prepares for more climate action
With its announcement on April 13 the Government of Ontario has arguably set the primary direction for mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the province if not the country for the foreseeable future.
Crews break ground at Cedar Point
Crews have broken ground at the 100MW Cedar Point wind project in south-western Ontario, a 50-50 joint venture by Suncor and NextEra Energy Canada.
Civil work is underway on access roads, foundations and transmission poles, Suncor spokesperson Nicole Fisher told reNEWS. Work has also started on the collection system.
"We anticipate that turbine erection will begin in early summer," said Fisher.

Scrutiny intensifies over ownership of LDCs
With the provincial government's panel studying options and tabling recommendations for managing government assets, the question of whether electricity distributors should be broken up, amalgamated, sold, restructured or just left to their own devices has become quite topical. Endangered species successfully challenge renewable energy developers
In a unanimous decision, the Ontario Court of Appeal overturned the decision of the Ontario Divisional Court and sent to the Environmental Review Tribunal the matter of whether the Ministry's Renewable Energy Approval for a 9 turbine windfarm in Eastern Ontario should be revoked. The Court affirmed the ERT's finding that the BLanding's Turtle, an endangered species globally and in Ontario, would suffer serious and irreversible harm from the windfarm.
Bruce Power, KHNP extend collaboration on Candus

Two Candu operators — Canada's Bruce Power and Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) — have signed a memorandum of understanding to extend their cooperation, particularly in areas related to nuclear safety, operational performance and carrying out large projects such as refurbishment.
The agreement was signed in Seoul during a trade mission to South Korea being led by the nuclear industry and the government of Ontario.

'Blue Gold' Report details new hydroelectric possibilities within existing infrastructure
Recently, at the 2015 National Hydropower Association (NHA) annual conference in Washington, D.C., the Hydro Research Foundation (Foundation) released its report, "Blue Gold: Building new hydropower with existing infrastructure generating hydropower's future" (Blue Gold).
Blue Gold details consensus policy changes meant to unleash new hydropower development and focuses on hydropower development at existing infrastructure since, according to the Foundation, "this type of hydropower development is most likely to occur in the near term."

High court to hear suit over Alberta fracking
The Supreme Court of Canada will decide whether an Alberta woman can sue the province's energy regulator over her claim that hydraulic fracturing has so badly contaminated her well that the water can be set on fire.
Jessica Ernst began legal action against the regulator and Calgary-based energy company Encana in 2007 and amended her statement of claim in 2011 to include Alberta Environment.
U.S. DOE releases first-of-its-kind Hydropower Market Report
The U.S. Department of Energy announces availability of its 2014 Hydropower Market Report, the first ever report to quantify the current size, scope and variability of hydropower supplies in the U.S.
This new report was unveiled at the National Hydropower Association Annual Conference by Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency David Danielson.
