Updates and clarifications to the 'Noise Guidelines for Wind Farms'
Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change
The ministry is proposing changes to its "Noise Guidelines for Wind Farms" (Noise Guideline). The current Noise Guideline was developed in 2008 to provide direction to proponents regarding the assessment of noise from wind turbines and transformer substations when seeking ministry approval for a planned wind facility. The proposed changes to the Noise Guideline are intended to provide greater certainty, clarity and accuracy with respect to the assessment of noise from wind facilities.

BC Hydro awards contract for Site C hydropower project site preparation
Hydro World
Canadian utility BC Hydro has awarded a contract to Morgan Construction and Environmental Ltd. for preparation activities on the 1,100-MW Site C hydropower project's north bank. BC Hydro most recently extended bidding for the work for the preparation of a construction site on the north bank of the Peace River. Work also includes the excavation and disposal of about 3 million cubic meters, quarry development including riprap production of about 100,000 cubic meters, building 7.25 kilometers of access roads, and clearing and grubbing 115 hectares.

Ontario names board members to Western Climate Initiative
Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change
Ontario is moving closer to becoming part of North America's largest carbon market by naming two members to the board of the Western Climate Initiative, Inc., a non-profit, corporation that helps provinces and states deliver cap and trade programs. Two assistant deputy ministers from the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change — Rob Fleming and Jim Whitestone — are the new members.

White Pines wind project given the go-ahead

Recently, wpd Canada, the developer of the $135 million White Pines wind project located primarily on private land in South Marysburgh, Prince Edward County received word from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) that the REA application for the project has been approved. "Our application was submitted to the MOECC in September 2012 and we are confident it has undergone a comprehensive review," said wpd spokesperson, Kevin Surette. "MOECC has issued an approval for 27 of the 29 turbines applied for."

Nautilus Solar completes Canadian solar project

Nautilus Solar Energy, LLC has completed 14 rooftop projects in Ontario, totaling approximately 4.1 megawatts, with an additional six projects of 1.9 megawatts expected to be completed shortly. The project represents one of the largest financings of a distributed generation solar photovoltaic portfolio, says the company.

Renewable energy gains greater opportunity in U.S. clean power plan

After a year of being pummeled by opponents, Obama's final carbon reduction plan emerged recently with an even stronger push for renewable energy. Wind and solar energy are centerpieces of the Clean Power Plan, the United States' first ever rule to reduce carbon dioxide from power plants. The rule not only makes renewables one of the plan's three central building blocks, but also creates special incentives to spur communities to build renewables more quickly than required.

World's first integrated geothermal and biomass plant goes online
Renewable Energy World
Enel Green Power has announced the completion of a five megawatt (MW) biomass power plant in Italy's Tuscany region that integrates biomass with geothermal steam generation. A first of its kind, the newly constructed biomass plant will use locally sourced virgin forest organic matter and a "super-heater" boiler to increase steam temperatures at the nearby 13-MW Cornia two geothermal plant.
