Electricity sector reports 22 per cent reduction in carbon emissions

The Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) today released its 2015 Sustainable ElectricityTM Annual Report, titled "Delivering Value to Canadians". The report highlights that CEA member companies achieved a 5.8 per cent reduction in GHG emissions in 2014, contributing to a significant 22 per cent reduction in carbon emissions over the last five years.

TransAlta to build Alberta's first large energy storage

TransAlta Corporation announced recently that it has been awarded $250,000 from Alberta Innovates — Energy & Environment Solutions (AI-EES) to help launch Alberta's first large-scale commercial energy storage project. TransAlta will use commercial-scale lithium-ion batteries to reduce energy costs for the customer.

Nalcor selects preferred contractor for 824-MW Muskrat Falls hydropower

Hydrogen fuel cell project at Honolulu Harbor

Hydrogen fuel cells have a long track record of supplying efficient, clean power for a wide range of applications, including forklifts, emergency backup systems, and vehicles. An analysis by Sandia and DOE showed that due to fluctuating loads in maritime auxiliary power applications, a hydrogen fuel cell, which follows the load, is more energy efficient than a diesel engine. A hydrogen fuel cell only supplies power when it is needed. The Maritime Hydrogen Fuel Cell Project is a demonstration of this analysis in a commercial port setting.

Macquarie Venture gets $422 million U.K. offshore wind license

The U.K. energy regulator granted Macquarie Corporate Holdings Pty Ltd. and 3i Infrastructure Plc a license to own and operate a 269 million-pound ($422 million) offshore wind transmission link in the Irish Sea. The license enables the West of Duddon Sands Transmission Plc venture to manage the electricity link for 20 years, Ofgem said. The link transports power from the 389-MW Duddon Sands wind farm to the shore.

China Three Gorges buys majority shares in two Brazilian hydropower projects

Brazilian infrastructure group Triunfo Participacoes e Investimentos S.A. has agreed to sell its controlling stakes in three energy generating subisidiaries to the China Three Gorges Corp., the company announced earlier this week. The U.S. $538 million deal will see China Three Gorges assume control of Triunfo's shares in generators Rio Canoas Energia, Rio Verde Energia and trading company Triunfo Negocios de Energia.
