Ontario Power Generation, Taykwa Tagamou partnering to develop 28-MW Sutherland hydropower

Work has begun on the 28-MW Sutherland hydropower plant in Ontario, partners Ontario Power Generation and Coral Rapids Power have announced. The $228.3 million project — named after community leader Peter Sutherland Sr. — will divert water through a powerhouse from New Post Creek before re-depositing it some 250 meters away in the Abitibi River.

Rolls-Royce to provide biogas CHP system in Wisconsin

Rolls-Royce has been selected by Wisconsin-based Statz Bros., Inc to provide an MTU Onsite Energy Series 4000 combined heat and power system for its newly developed dairy facility. The system will operate on biogas generated by the anaerobic digestion of cow manure from the facility's more than 2,500 Holsteins.

Abengoa selected to build the world's largest biomass combined heat and power plant in the U.K.

Abengoa, an international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, and Toshiba Corporation, have been selected as preferred bidders to build the Tees Renewable Energy Plant. The project is owned by MGT Teesside, a subsidiary of MGT Power, a British company committed to developing utility scale biomass CHP projects. This will be the world's newly built largest power and steam from biomass plant, and will be located in the Port of Teesside, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom.

Fuell cell CHP goes MW-scale in Germany

An agreement has been put in place to build Europe's first commercial MW-scale fuel cell power plant. FuelCell Energy Solutions (FCES), the European subsidiary of US-based FuelCell Energy, and Germany's E.ON Connecting Energies will collaborate on the 1.4-MW plant at non-corroding materials manufacturer Friatec's headquarters and production facility in Mannheim, Germany. E.ON will own the plant, and FCES will install, operate and maintain it under a long-term service agreement, the companies said in a statement.

Iran builds Mideast's first geothermal plant

Iran is building the Middle East's first geothermal power plant at the foot of an inactive volcanic peak as the country is racing to meet a runaway demand for electricity by its growing population. The pilot station in northwestern Meshguin Shahr in the Ardabil province is projected to come on stream in the next two years, putting Iran in the club of two dozen nations with the geothermal power generation capacity.

CHP planned for Neven greenhouse

Neven Produce Inc., a greenhouse operation near Brantford, Ontario, was recently awarded a contract for 3.2-MW of CHP under the CHPSOP program. Actual installation is still a year away, owner James Neven explains. Most of the engineering is complete, including selection of the particular genset and supplier — a Jenbacher unit from GE.
