APPrO invites nominations for the 2013 Hedley Palmer Award
APPrO
The Board of APPrO has recently invited all members of the power industry to suggest candidates to receive this year's Hedley Palmer Award. The Hedley Palmer Award is an special form of recognition presented each by APPrO to honour an individual who in the judgment of the APPrO Board has made an outstanding contribution to the Ontario power industry. It has been given to a different individual each year since 1989 during the banquet dinner at the annual IPPSO or APPrO Conference. According to APPrO, it’s the highest honour bestowed annually in the power generation business in Canada.

Eastern Ontario power plants sold to TransCanada

TransCanada didn't disclose the cost of the individual plants but Canadian Solar said they're valued at more than $95 million. The power-generating operations — one in Brockville, ON, and the other in Ottawa — will sell their electricity to the provincial grid under 20-year agreements.

Faulty bolts shut down Canada's Wuskwatim hydroelectric project

Faulty bolts discovered during a routine inspection of Manitoba Hydro's 200-MW Wuskwatim hydropower project have forced the operator to temporarily shut down three turbine units. Company officials said the weakened bolts were found in the turbines' discharge rings after the units had been in service for about 8,000 hours, though what caused the bolts to weaken has yet to be discovered.

Fortis pursuing new hydropower plant in British Columbia

Fortis Generation is moving to the next stage in developing a new 45-to 65 MW hydropower plant along the Similkameen River in British Columbia, the distribution utility said. The phase includes public consultations, interaction with First Nations groups and feasibility studies, Fortis said.

Gas-fired generation falls from 2013 levels but still high

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that although natural gas use for power generation through the first seven months of 2013 is down 14 per cent from historic highs last year, it remains above the 2009–2011 average across the U.S. The drop is the result of higher gas prices relative to coal compared to 2012.
