ASA was invited to attend the Omni Spring Meeting this week in Orlando, Fla., where Mike Adelizzi of ASA and Grace Johnson of the ASA Education Foundation had the opportunity to connect with nearly 1,000 Omni distributors and manufacturers about the value of ASA membership. "There is a much renewed interest in the association," Adelizzi said. "Word is out that there is a new vitality at ASA with added levels of value to support the membership." Main topics of discussion included the new ASA University tools and resources, the new forecasting program to be unveiled during Network ASA 2012 in Orlando, and ongoing issues affecting our industry on Capitol Hill.

The American Supply Association Education Foundation (ASAEF) has announced the hiring of Christopher Olsen as Program Development Manager. In this role, Olsen will be responsible for the creation, design, development, and implementation of the association's comprehensive print and online training programs. In addition to developing courses, Olsen also will assist association membership in the development and implementation of company training programs. More

Industrial Metals Up on Better Manufacturing Data

Industrial metal prices rallied Wednesday after a report that manufacturing grew in January, offering some hope that companies may need more raw materials in the months ahead. U.S. factory production grew at the fastest pace in seven months, according to the Institute of Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers. Its manufacturing index increased to 54.1 from 53.1 in December. New orders and order backlogs hit nine-month highs. That suggests production could rise. Separately, the Commerce Department said construction spending rose 1.5 percent in December, the fifth straight monthly gain. More

Manufacturers' News Inc., compiler and publisher of industrial directories for all fifty states, has generated a list of the top U.S. cities by number of manufacturing jobs as of Jan. 1. According to Manufacturers' News, Houston takes the top spot for industrial employment with 235,038 manufacturing jobs, up 2.9 percent over last year. New York ranks second with 140,952 jobs, up 1.3 percent. Third-ranked Chicago accounts for 107,264, down 1.3 percent, while St. Louis accounts for 80,795, down 2.8 percent. Los Angeles accounts for the fifth-most at 79,873 jobs, down 4.5 percent. More
