On May 3 and 4, more than 30 dedicated members of the American Supply Association came to Washington, D.C., for ASA's Legislative Fly-In. Those in attendance not only had the chance to develop relationships and learn from their peers, but they also had the opportunity to educate their congressional leaders on critical industry issues. The event kicked off with a discussion on the state of the economy and the new health care law. ASA members also engaged in spirited discussions with top economists and health care experts. "This [advocacy] may not have been something we necessarily wanted to do, but for the sake of our industry and our individual businesses, it was something that we needed to do," said ASA President Bill Kenny, of Kenny Pipe & Supply Inc. in Nashville, Tenn.

Last week, preceding ASA's Legislative Fly-In, the association's Government and Public Affairs Committee took the opportunity to meet in person to map out political and policy strategies for the road ahead. After reviewing recent polling data surveying ASA's membership concerns, taxes and health care were two clear front-runners directing advocacy efforts. Whether it is preserving LIFO or formulating an association position on comprehensive tax reform, ASA's Government and Public Affairs Committee will be the proving ground for developing new legislative initiatives to pursue in Washington. Other issues of importance continue to be copper theft and WaterSense, which ASA members advocated with great success on Capitol Hill the following day. Finally, committee members made individual commitments to raise $2,000 each for continued support of pro-business candidates.

President Barack Obama told workers at an Indianapolis factory recently the best way to improve the U.S. economy and reduce high gasoline prices is to invest in American manufacturing of clean energy products. "I don't want the new breakthrough technologies, the new manufacturing to take place in China and India," Obama said. "I want all those new jobs made in Indiana, right here in the United States of America." The president spoke for 18 minutes on the factory floor where Allison Transmission soon will expand production of hybrid engines for trucks and buses. The expansion, which is supported by a $63 million federal grant, is expected to create 200 new jobs in the next two years. More
