Senate Judiciary Committee to Advance Metal Theft Legislation

With immigration reform moving to the Senate floor, this week the Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a markup in committee of S. 394, the Metal Theft Prevention Act of 2013. ASA has been leading the efforts to educate Senate judiciary staff on the merits of this law by coordinating with other stakeholders that are equally impacted.

Manufacturing Contracts in May
Modern Distribution Management
Manufacturing contracted in May for the first time since November 2012, according to the latest Manufacturing ISM Report on Business. The Purchasing Managers Index from the Institute for Supply Management registered 49%, a decrease of 1.7 percentage points from April's reading of 50.7%, indicating contraction in manufacturing.

Senators, Employer Groups Make Case to Supreme Court on NLRB Recess Appointments

All 45 U.S. Senate Republicans, the Associated Builders and Contractors-led Coalition for a Democratic Workplace and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have filed friend-of-the-court briefs asking for the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a lower court ruling that President Barack Obama's recess appointments to the NLRB were unconstitutional.

Nonresidential Drives Construction Spending Increase in April
Modern Distribution Management
Construction spending in April 2013 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $860.8 billion, 0.4% above the revised March estimate, according to the U.S. Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce. April was 4.3% above April 2012.

Why US Manufacturing Can't Get Off the Mat

Matthew Philips writes, "In December, I wrote a piece pointing out that despite all the hype surrounding America's supposed Manufacturing Renaissance, the data painted a starker picture. Hardly a renaissance, U.S. manufacturing seemed to be closer to a recession back then. Six months later the story hasn't changed much, despite the continued sentiment that 'Made in the USA' is staging a big comeback. The anecdotes are nice, but the broader data just don't bear it out."
