Nominations for ASA's 2012 Member Safety Recognition Awards, to be presented during NetworkASA 2013 in Washington, D.C., are being accepted through Thursday, Aug 1. Six awards will be presented — three in the distributor category and three in the manufacturer category — and all are based on number of safe hours worked in 2012. The award program was created by the ASA Safety Committee to elevate awareness in all aspects of the PHCP and PVF industry and to recognize ASA members who had the lowest incident rate of nonfatal injuries and illnesses throughout the previous year. Watts Water Technologies Cuts Ribbon on New Hampshire Foundry

Last week, Watts Water Technologies "cut the ribbon" on a multimillion-dollar, 30,000-square-foot foundry, an expansion to the Franklin, N.H., facility of one of its operating subsidiaries, which produces products for many of its brands. New Hampshire state and local dignitaries, including Gov. Maggie Hassan and Franklin Mayor Kenneth Merrifield, joined officials from Watts Water Technologies Inc. to celebrate the occasion.

ADP: Manufacturing Employment Down Again in May
Automated Data Processing said that nonfarm payroll growth rose by 135,000 in May, lower than the consensus estimate of 165,000. The pace of hiring has slowed somewhat from earlier in the year. The average employment gain between November and February was 215,000, but that has fallen to just 134,000 in the past three months. This data is consistent with other indicators that have shown increased skittishness on the part of businesses to hire of late.

Cost Convergence with China: An Energizer for US Manufacturing?

Is a shrinking cost gap between China and the United States for advanced manufacturing really changing the calculus of location decisions and making possible a "manufacturing renaissance" in the United States? Optimists like Hal Sirkin of the Boston Consulting Group have been predicting a convergence of labor and other costs — and a resulting U.S. manufacturing revival — for several years, while skeptics like Jan Hatzius of Goldman Sachs still don't see it.
