Nominations for ASA's 2012 Member Safety Recognition Awards, to be presented during NetworkASA 2013 in Washington, D.C., are being accepted through Thursday, Aug 1. Six awards will be presented — three in the distributor category and three in the manufacturer category — and all are based on number of safe hours worked in 2012. The award program was created by the ASA Safety Committee to elevate awareness in all aspects of the PHCP and PVF industry and to recognize ASA members who had the lowest incident rate of nonfatal injuries and illnesses throughout the previous year. Manufacturing Technology Orders Up 13.6% in May
Industrial Distribution
May U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $430.06 million according to AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTO program, was up 13.6% from April but down 7.6% when compared with the total of $465.38 million reported for May 2012. With a year-to-date total of $2.09 million, 2013 is down 6.9% compared with 2012.

Small Business Optimism Index Falls in June

Small business optimism remained in tepid territory in June, as the National Federation of Independent Business's monthly economic index dropped just under a point (0.9) and landed at 93.5. Six of the 10 index components fell, two rose and two were unchanged. While job creation plans increased slightly in June, expectations for improved business conditions remained negative.

ISM Reports a Mild Rebound in June Manufacturing Data

Following a month that saw its lowest levels since June 2009 and its first contraction since November 2012, manufacturing activity in June recovered some of its lost ground, according to the Institute for Supply Management's monthly Manufacturing ISM Report on Business. The PMI, the index used by the ISM to measure manufacturing activity — at 50.9 in June was ahead of May's 49.0 by 1.9% and slightly ahead of April's 50.7. June's PMI is below the 12-month average of 51.2 and it has been over 50 in six of the last seven months.

Copper Bucks China's Import Trend in June

Chinese traders have been taking advantage of a profitable arbitrage opportunity for copper, contributing to a healthy year-on-year increase in copper imports last month. This bucked the broader, lackluster trend for imports, but it doesn't necessarily reflect demand in the world's largest user of the industrial metal.

Manufacturing, Logistics Industries Ranked in All 50 States
New York's manufacturing sector receives an F and its logistics gets a C. The situation isn't much better for several nearby states, according to the 2013 Manufacturing and Logistics Report Card, an in-depth analysis from Ball State University's Center for Business and Economic Research. The report grades all 50 states, ranking several areas of the economy.
