Internet Tax Moratorium Passes House, Heads to Senate

This week, the House made permanent a longstanding moratorium that prohibited a tax on the Internet. Originally designed to foster what was then new technology, the moratorium has repeatedly been reauthorized by Congress, and they made a big step toward making it permanent. Unfortunately, what the House did not address was one of ASA's longtime priorities: leveling the playing field between traditional brick and mortar businesses and those that are Internet-only. Thankfully, the Senate has stepped up once again to address this inequality.

High-Tech Sector to Drive Manufacturing Growth in 2014

The economy continues to sputter in low-growth mode, but the manufacturing industry should grow faster than GDP, according to the latest quarterly economic forecast from the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation. The industry group predicts that inflation-adjusted gross domestic product will expand 2.5% in 2014 (down from the 2.8% forecast in the previous quarterly report) and 3.2% in 2015 (no change from the previous report). For manufacturers, though, the news is a bit better, as manufacturing production should grow by 3.2% in 2014 and 4% in 2015 (consistent with the previous report).
