House Takes Up Regulatory Reform Package
American Supply Association    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
This week in Washington, the House took up sweeping regulatory reform legislation to roll back many of the burdens on today's small businesses. With ASA's support, H.R. 4078, the Red Tape Reduction and Small Business Job Creation Act, was introduced combining a number of commonsense proposals that would bring about a greater sense of certainty for the business community. Specifically, it would prohibit any federal agency from taking any significant regulatory action until the Secretary of Labor reports that the Bureau of Labor Statistics average of monthly unemployment rates for any quarter is 6% or less. Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
New home sales recorded their biggest drop in more than a year in June and prices resumed their downward trend, dealing a setback for the budding housing market recovery. Single family home sales tumbled 8.4% to a seasonally adjusted 350,000-unit annual rate, the lowest rate in five months, the Commerce Department said. The percent decline was the largest since February 2011 and much of the drop in sales last month reflected a record 60% plunge in the Northeast, which had enjoyed hefty gains since December last year. European Debt Worries Drive Down Commodity Prices
The Associated Press via San Jose Mercury News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Persistent worries about Europe's debt-riddled countries drove most commodity prices lower Monday. Even a streak of record high prices for corn and soybeans was snapped. Oil fell 4%, copper 2% and wheat 3.2 %. Gold and silver also dropped. About the only bright spot was natural gas, which ended up 1.2%. The European concerns focused on Spain after its economy contracted 0.4% in the second quarter and the government predicted the economy would continue to shrink into 2013. More

Worldsteel: Global Steel Output Dips in June
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Global steel output slipped in June as the industry grapples with weak demand and falling prices, data from an industry body showed. Crude steel production declined by 0.1% to 128 million tonnes in June, compared with the same month a year earlier, according to data from the World Steel Association. Global output has been slowing in recent months, from a 1.2% year-on-year growth in April to just a 0.7% growth in May, as a weak global economy erodes demand for raw material. More

Worker Shortage? Teach Teens Manufacturing Skills
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
During her sophomore year at Kettle Moraine High School in Wales, Wis., Tara Britten ditched class and was in danger of expulsion. "They thought I was stupid," Britten says. "Nobody would challenge me at the level I needed to be challenged at, so it made me angry and bored." Her attitude changed last fall when the 16-year-old junior started participating in a nonprofit program called Second Chance Partners that teaches high school students skills they can use for manufacturing jobs. Britten, who was not expecting to graduate, is now earning $8 an hour working for a local manufacturer and completing her high school curriculum. She's also learning such skills as welding and reading blueprints and is confident she can get a shipyard welding job that pays $15 an hour and offers benefits when she graduates next year. More
