Obama's Stealth War on Global Warming
National Journal
As President Barack Obama tries to fight global warming without any backing from a gridlocked Congress, he's using every weapon in his executive arsenal. His Environmental Protection Agency will soon roll out controversial regulations on carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants. He's told every Cabinet agency to look into ways it can use its authority to act on climate change. And now the administration is stocking the executive branch with an army of new appointees who have a history of working aggressively on climate issues and clean energy, often from leadership jobs at environmental advocacy groups.

Beschloss: US Returns to Key Economical 2014 Global Growth
The Desert Sun
For most of the past decade, the well-being of the global economy, especially in the wake of the Great Recession, has been expected from the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China) and lately South Africa. But as we anticipate economic aspirations for 2014, the BRICS alternative is losing steam, while the U.S. could again become the center of potential promise. What could add to America’s more prominent role next year are the unexpectedly growing economic dynamic of its flanking NAFTA partners, Canada and Mexico, both of which are now generating trillion-dollar-plus business entities.

US Trade Deficit Widens to $39.1B in July
The Associated Press via Industrial Distribution
The U.S. trade deficit widened in July from a four-year low in June. American consumers bought more foreign cars and other imported goods, while U.S. companies exported fewer long-lasting manufactured goods. The Commerce Department said that the trade gap rose 13% to $39.1 billion. That's up from June's deficit of $34.5 billion, which was the smallest since late 2009. Imports increased 1.6% to $228.6 billion, lifted by more shipments of oil, autos and consumer goods. Exports slipped 0.6% to $189.4 billion. Companies shipped fewer capital goods, such as civilian aircraft and industrial engines.

Pace of US Manufacturing Hits 2-Year Peak
The Associated Press via Industrial Distribution
U.S. factories expanded last month at the fastest pace since June 2011 on a jump in orders. The report signals that manufacturing output could strengthen in coming months. The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said Tuesday that its manufacturing index rose to 55.7 in August from 55.4 in July. That topped the index's 12-month average of 52. A reading above 50 indicates growth.

US Manufacturing Exports Have Become the Engine of the American Economy
SupplyChainBrain
Export manufacturing has recently become the unsung hero of the U.S. economy. Despite all the public focus on the U.S. trade deficit, little attention has been paid to the fact that the country's exports have been growing more than seven times faster than GDP since 2005. As a share of the U.S. economy, in fact, exports are at their highest point in 50 years.

'Going Green' Motivated By Saving Green, Not the Planet, Survey of Supply Chain Attitudes Concludes
DC Velocity
Sustainability initiatives are catching on with top global supply chain executives, but for the economic rather than for the environmental benefits, a new survey has found. The survey, conducted in the spring by New York-based business advisory firm Alix Partners LLC and released earlier this month, found that 72 percent of the roughly 150 respondents had sustainability policies or sets of sustainability objectives in place. The survey results, however, indicate that most of these programs are driven by potential cost savings rather than altruism.
