Distributors Resilient in September
American Supply Association
ASA’s Monthly Pulse Report provides a regular snapshot of performance for the PHCP-PVF industry. For the month ending September 30, 2017, wholesaler-distributors reported a median sales increase of 3.7% compared to 2016, although industrial pipe-valve-fitting (PVF) distributors reported a median sales increase of just 0.1%. Calendar year-to-date, all respondents reported median sales growth of 5.7%, and the median increase for the trailing twelve months was 5.9%. Inventories rose 5.0% compared to prior year, and the median three-months average days sales outstanding increased from 43.7 to 44.1 days. Only 44.4% of the respondents reported an increase in gross margin percentages for the month, and company YTD profit before taxes increased for 65.0% of the total sample. The percentage of all respondents having more Full-Time Equivalent employees compared to a year ago increased from 51.8% in August to 55.6% in September.

PHCP-PVF Wholesalers Plan for Y-E Holidays

This winter, the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays are on Mondays. ASA’s most recent Monthly Pulse Report sheds some light on how one-in-five PHCP-PVF wholesaler members surveyed across the U.S. plan to observe the year-end holidays.
  • Mon, Dec 25: 100.0% of the respondents will be closed, and 4.9% will offer on-call and/or emergency service only, predominantly in the Midwest and Northeast;
  • Tue, Dec 26: four of every five respondents will be open for business, although 11.1 % with special hours and/or reduced staff;
  • Mon, Jan 1: 98.6% of the respondents will be closed, and 4.9% will offer on-call and/or emergency service only;
  • Tue, Jan 2: nine of every ten respondents will be open for business, although 7.4% with reduced staff.

Standard for Mechanical Systems Out for Review

ASHRAE/ASPE/AWWA Standard 191P, Standard for the Efficient Use of Water in Building Mechanical Systems is out for public review and comment. The deadline for submitting comments is November 27, 2017. The ASA Codes and Standards Committee is considering the public review draft so if you would like the Committee to consider any comments you might have please submit your comment by November 10, 2017.
