ASA Urges Treasury Department to Rethink Pending Estate Tax Changes
American Supply Association
Last week, ASA joined with 1000’s of other businesses and business groups, urging the Department of Treasury to withdraw their proposal that would threaten family run businesses across the country. As our letter states, “If implemented, the regulations could have a detrimental impact on family-owned businesses. They would result in an increase of estate and gift taxes by 30 percent or more, divert capital from business investment, threaten jobs, and force many families to sell their businesses to outside interests. By restricting how small businesses can transfer shares of family-owned businesses to their heirs, this proposal would throw the succession and estate planning of thousands of family-owned businesses into disarray.”

Truck Drivers May Get Younger
ASA Materials Market Digest©
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has proposed a three-year pilot program to allow a limited number of people between the ages of 18 to 21 to operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce. Participants would need to have received special military training to drive heavy vehicles and be sponsored by a motor carrier. The proposal is aimed at alleviating a severe shortage of long-haul truckers, which some sources place at upwards of 100,000 drivers. The trucking industry has an astonishing annual turnover rate of 100.0 percent, the highest in the industry’s history. Latest Report Identifies Larger Changes for Compensation, Benefits
American Supply Association
ASA’s 2016 Executive & Employee Compensation Report identifies some larger changes over the past three years, including healthcare insurance. The median monthly family premium for a PPO increased 12.0% from 2013 to 2015 compared to 8.5% from 2011 to 2013. Participants in this year’s study reported a median average premium increase of 4.0% due to obligations related to the Affordable Healthcare Act (ACA). Employers continued paying around 60.0% of total plan premiums in 2015. However, employees' out-of-pocket costs generally increased. For example, the median family deductible for a PPO plan rose $500 from $1,500 in 2013. Typically, office visit co-pays also increased by $5.00, or around 20.0% for most plans. Overall, companies have consolidated the number of plans offered to employees. In 2013, firms typically offered multiple plans, but today, only about half reported offering more than one.
