ASA Reaches Net Membership Growth for 2nd Consecutive Year

This past week, ASA was proud to welcome its 300th and 301st wholesaler-distributors members. As a result, 2013 will be the second consecutive year that ASA has achieved net membership growth, a milestone which hadn't previously been reached in decades. M&M Supply, located in Oklahoma City, and Thomas Pipe and Supply Co., located in Phoenix, joined now more than 300 of their channel partners as members of the nation’s premier association representing all segments of the PHCP and PVF industry.

House Passes Asbestos Reform Bill
American Supply Association
This week, the House of Representative took a big step towards reining in the out of control litigation nightmare that has plagued a number of small businesses, including many in ASA. The bill, the Furthering Asbestos Claim Transparency (FACT) Act would require the 60 asbestos trusts around the country to file quarterly reports about who is filing claims for compensation.

Beschloss: 2012 US Energy-Related Carbon Dioxide Emissions at Lowest Since 1994

The U.S. Energy Information Administration has issued "electrifying news." Because carbon dioxide emissions are, along with greenhouse gases, the ultimate effluence putrefying the atmosphere, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, and such civic allies as the Sierra Club, the 2012 3.8% drop should hopefully have come as a cause for satisfaction to all. Whether it does or not may depend on the interpretation of those who may be demanding even greater reductions, no matter how injurious such extremism may impact economic betterment.

Manufacturing Technology Orders Up 5.8% in September
Modern Distribution Management
September U.S. manufacturing technology orders were $397.57 million, up 5.8% from August but down 31.1% when compared with the total of $577.17 million reported for September 2012. With a year-to-date total of $3.5 billion, 2013 is down 11.3% compared with 2012.

Using the 'Six Value Medals' to Identify and Assess Risk

Edward de Bono is famous for promoting creative thinking, and he has written many books to explain his radical ideas. Perhaps his best-known technique is "Six Thinking Hats," encouraging people to adopt a range of different perspectives when thinking about an issue. Indeed, "Six Thinking Hats" can be helpful in risk identification. One of de Bono's other thinking tools is the "Six Value Medals." These describe different types of value that are important to people and organizations, and against which we can perform a "value scan" when making decisions or determining courses of action.
