New Report Strikes at Heart of Affordable Care Act
American Supply Association
From Feb. 6: This week, the Congressional Budget Office, known as the official "scorekeeper" on Capitol Hill, issued one of its regular reports on the country's budget outlook. Embedded late in the report is a section exploring what the labor market will look like as a result of the Affordable Care Act. While the report paints an optimistic picture of our nation's deficit, it projects that nearly 2.3 million workers will leave the workforce by 2021. The report suggest that more people will choose not to work or to work fewer hours because they will no longer need to in order to have health insurance. The CBO also changed its projection of the number enrolled in private insurance through the ACA from 7 million to 6 million, and in Medicaid from 9 million to 8 million. Read the full report.

OSHA Revises Workplace Injury and Illness Recordkeeping Requirements
American Supply Association
From Sept. 18: Last week OSHA announced a final rule updating the notification process when a death or work-related hospitalization, loss of an eye or amputation occurs at the workplace. Under the revised rule, employers will be required to notify OSHA of work-related fatalities within eight hours and work-related in-patient hospitalizations, amputations, or loss of an eye within 24 hours. Previously, OSHA's regulations required an employer to report only work-related fatalities and in-patient hospitalizations of three or more employees. Reporting single hospitalizations, amputations or loss of an eye was not required under the previous rule. To learn more, click here.

House Puts Tax Reform Back on Table
American Supply Association
From Feb. 27: Although Speaker John Boehner and Senate Republican Leader McConnell doused the flames of emerging tax reform this week, small-business owners should nonetheless be aware of the latest proposal to come out of the House Ways and Means Committee. As reported last week, the discussion draft repeals LIFO; in addition, it also scales back the mortgage interest deduction. That is just the tip of the iceberg, in flattening our tax code, nearly all business credits would be repealed, is this such a good idea? To learn more click here.
