| || GBA NEWS AND UPDATES - 2017|
For more than 15 years, GBA has been collecting key financial metrics from member-firms so our members can measure their success and improve business performance and optimize efficiency. The newest GBA Business Brief — available only to members and free of charge — comprises the GBA Business Practices Committee's 2016-17 Financial-Performance Survey report, covering key financial-performance issues surveyed firms reported.
GBA enhanced this year's report with trendlines so our members can track their progress on key financial indicators.
Thank you to all the firms that participated in the survey. We had more response to this survey than we have had in the past. A special thanks to Lee James (Lee James & Associates), Matt Moler, P.E. (S&ME) and Phil Pettway, (GBA) for collaborating on the survey and for their efforts on compilation of the results.

GBA has been documenting the Standard of Care for Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) since 1987. While the process has evolved, the purpose of these studies overall remains the same, to document a "national standard of care" for Phase I ESAs, a useful tool for managing the risks associated with environmental conditions on or near a property where a project is taking place.
This newly-released study, performed by GBA's Environmental Business Council (EBC), includes the review of 197 reports from 2007-2010, gathered from all over the country from various sources such as corporate archives, GBA member firms, and other consultants.
The EBC thanks all those who participated in this study and those that compiled the data to prepare this valuable report. This is another example of GBA helping our members to manage business risk by collaborating on common issues. GBA helps members to be smarter, stronger and more successful in business.

GBA reminds us regularly, words and phrases are critical to the success of geoprofessional consultants. It is important that we are aware some words and phrases have troublesome meanings and can create costly problems. The following list comprises a few of these words and phrases. Some you should not use at all; others you should use only with deliberate care. Keep in mind, that the best evidence is what's in writing and the final arbiter of what words mean usually is a jury of one's peers.
For more taboo words and reference material addressing "Risky Language", "Taboo Words" and "Dirty Words":
- All/every/full/complete (these absolutes bar the exceptions that usually exist)
- Certify/warrant/guarantee/ensure/assure/insure (guarantee-liability is not covered by PLI)
- Client (seldom is the client representative the client, too)
- Defend (not in contracts)
- Product (geoprofessionals do not produce products unless they welcome product-liability claims)
- Represent (can create a fiduciary-responsibility liability)
GBA Vice President, Woody Vogt, P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, F. ASTM (Paradigm Consulting) and GBA Secretary/Treasurer Kim Morrison, P.E., R.G. (Morrison Solutions) attended the annual GeoCoalition meeting on August 9th and 10th with GBA's Executive Director, Joel Carson.
The GeoCoalition is an informal association of professional organizations representing the geotechnical design and construction community formed to encourage communication, cooperation and collaboration among its members. The group comes together once each year to share insights, calendars, and plans for professional activities and to discuss issues of common interest to the constituent organizations.
This year, the group focused on common issues associated with professional licensure, technology, managing risk, and elevating the geoprofessions. Mr. Vogt said "This is a unique opportunity for design professionals to work with constructors to identify common issues and work together to resolve them. It was a very productive meeting."
Members of the GeoCoalition are:
