New Era
The future of libraries in a digital age
Architectural Record    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In its March issue, Architectural Record magazine profiles best new libraries from around the globe. It also reflects on the role of libraries and library design in a world where books, old and new, are available anytime, anywhere in electronic form. The modern library has always been something of a community center—a place where people gather to learn, whether in a story hour or a craft workshop, in the presence of others. Many observers contend that this role, often referred to as an "information commons," must now take center stage. More

Indoor lighting goes outdoors
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The trend toward creating "outdoor rooms" has dramatically increased lighting options for patios and deck areas. Most indoor lighting fixtures—chandeliers, pendant lights, table lamps—now have a counterpart designed for use outside. "There are wonderful new outdoor lights that are almost art pieces themselves," says Alene Workman, FASID. Colored lights, illuminated furniture and subtle fixtures designed to blend with nature are predicted to be popular this year. More

Designing an airport naturally
Metropolis    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Indianapolis International Airport, designed by HOK, incorporates principles of biophilic design to ease the stress and strain of air travel. Biophilic designers recognize the positive influence nature has on human well-being. The ever-present reminders of the natural world give people a much-needed connection to something slower, more evocative, more memorable and reassuring than what we've grown to expect of airports. Influencing conservation behaviors in the workplace
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Saving energy within organizational settings can be tough because employees typically have no direct financial incentive to reduce energy use and rarely have access to information regarding their level of consumption. A recent study found two relatively straightforward interventions—group-level feedback and peer education—had positive influences on workplace energy consumption. Since other studies have shown that continuous feedback about consumption can be useful in reducing home energy use, environmentally-responsible designers may be interested in creating in-workplace, individual- and group-level real-time usage "meters." Hospitality for the 'bleisure' class
Hospitality Net    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Coined by The Future Laboratory, a trend forecaster and brand consultancy in London, "bleisure" refers to the blurring of business and leisure. Bleisure travelers are far less formal than their business-only predecessors, conducting impromptu meetings in lounges and setting up mini-offices in lobbies. Savvy hotels are catering to their needs, providing free Wi-Fi, ample electrical outlets and quiet nooks in public spaces that used to be solely used for socializing. Bleisure is one of four new directions in hospitality defined by Design Hotels AG's Founder and CEO Claus Sendlinger. More

Smart glass meets the need for light, space and privacy
Glass On Web    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Designers and developers are looking to the hotel bathroom as the new frontier of the guestroom, turning what has long been a mostly functional space into a haven and means of escape, in particular by opening up closed and cluttered bathrooms through increasing the levels of light and space. Smart glass, which changes from clear to opaque at the flick of a switch, is becoming a popular solution. It combines the functionality of an opaque wall with the style and lighting of clear glass, and ties in with the prevailing trend of hotels pursuing clean, minimalist styles in room design. More

Ikat: Ancient woven fabric makes modern resurgence
The Kansas City Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Rita St. Clair, FASID, and her staff turned to an ancient classic when the Baltimore interior designer was asked to decorate a room upon her induction into the Washington Design Center Hall of Fame. The group wanted a fabric to accent a number of pieces in the room and make them pop. They chose ikat—a weaving and dyeing technique that uses a range of materials. St. Clair has been a fan of ikat since falling in love with it during a trip to Turkey in the mid-1970s. "I think it is wonderful," she says. "It's a free-flowing geometric design. It is so adaptable to modern design. The colors are very deep and usable." The fabric is the focus of "Colors of the Oasis: Central Asian Ikats," an exhibit at the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C.
