Individual air-conditioning vents prove ultra-efficient
New Scientist    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A study conducted by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley found that installing individual air-conditioning vents at office desks, and putting controls at each worker's fingertips, can cut a building's energy use in half. Personalized ventilation means less air needs to be cooled and pumped through a building because air needs only to be blown at desks, and not throughout entire rooms. Individual vents can also switch off automatically when a desk is vacant. Past research has shown personal ventilation can also make people more comfortable and possibly limit the spread of airborne diseases. More

The value of equipment planning
Healthcare Design    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Acute care projects need equipment planning more than most projects ever could. However, after hiring engineers, architects, interior designers, and others, there seems little left on the table. Equipment planning is also perceived by the client as something that the A&D team should have been taught to handle or should be experienced in. Think of the project as the heart and the patient care as the flow through that heart. If equipment planning is not done at the early stages of the design development a hole is created and goes undetected until stress is placed on the heart. More

Living Lichtenstein
Design Crisis    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Collectors and art enthusiasts have long appreciated the pop paintings of heavyweight Roy Lichtenstein, and now it seems that Lichtenstein's style is increasingly interpreted through textiles, patterns and paint. Lichtenstein himself did a series of interiors in his trademark style, hinting at the shape of things to come. But some designers have gone the next step and created interiors that bring Lichtenstein’s vision to life. More
