If you're considering a home-improvement project that will cut energy costs, it's not too late to take advantage of special federal tax credits. To qualify for the tax credits - which reimburse homeowners 10 percent of the cost of an Energy Star-qualifying home improvement project, up to $500 - the improvement must have been made in 2012 or 2013.

The Virginia Department of Health is advising residents to have an emergency kit prepared with supplies, such as an alternate fuel source for heating your home, flashlights and batteries in your home and car, blankets, food that needs no cooking or refrigeration, a three-day supply of water, prescription medicines, a battery-operated radio and flashlights, and battery-powered cellphone chargers.
