The International Builders’ Show had doors on wide display recently at Las Vegas, and modern and contemporary were definitely the buzzwords as this type of door took front and center. New England companies reach lead rule settlements with EPA

Several New England-area businesses performing painting and home renovation work have reached a settlement agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to comply with requirements designed to protect children from exposure to lead-based paint during painting and other renovation activities. The settlements also contain financial penalties which must be paid for alleged violations of EPA’s Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule.

Quantum dots may mean solar panels on house windows

As scientists learn more about the properties of quantum dots, their applications in everything from digital displays to renewable energy are becoming increasingly apparent. New research out of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico — done in collaboration with scientists from the University of Milano-Bicocca in Italy — reveals the light-emitting properties of quantum dots can be applied in solar energy by more efficiently harvesting sunlight. Ultimately, the team believes this could lead to the use of quantum dots in house windows, even, that double as solar panels.

Despite weather, construction industry making best of start to 2014

Builder confidence holds steady in April

Builder confidence in the market for newly built, single-family homes rose one point to 47 in April from a downwardly revised March reading of 46 on the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index. “Job growth is proceeding at a solid pace, mortgage interest rates remain historically low and home prices are affordable,” says NAHB chief economist David Crowe.

Small business owners: How many missed taking the small business Health Care Tax Credit?

A Kentucky professional who owns his own business found that he missed getting the Health Care Tax Credit for the past four years. Since the credit is worth 35 percent of what he is paying in health insurance, his business lost out on about $40,000. It gets worse: this year he could get a 50 percent tax credit. Since his firm is paying about $50,000 in health care benefits, it would have been a savings of about $25,000. Instead, his business will get nothing.
