AWDI celebrates 25 years since first Standards and Practices issued
AWDI
It was 1990, in Washington, D.C., that a group of "stakeholders" met to finalize the original AWDI Standards and Practices (Version 1.1) that would form the basis of the longest running, and most successful installer certification program and installation reference work for windows and doors.

The document finalized that day under the examination of representatives of most aspects of the window industry such as Washington Gas, DOE, Pozzi Window, among others, has morphed over 25 years of field experience, trial and error, window manufacturer scrutiny, and laboratory testing into today's most complete reference work on the installation of retrofit and replacement windows and doors under all conditions.

The AWDI Standards and Practices issued that day in May, 1990 became referenced in California Association of Window Manufacturers (CAWM) CAWM 400-95; DTA's Nail-On Windows in 1995; and ASTM E2112-01 and 07, among other pioneering reference standards.

It also became the organizational model for installation consistency and accuracy across all the original locations of Home Depot's At-Home Services.

The present content, in version 7.2, is the core of the EPA/Energy Star accepted installation reference instructions being used by window manufacturers for compliance with Version 6 requirements. And it continues to be the best selling and most widely distributed work on window and door installation.

This gorgeous stained glass window doubles as a solar panel
Inhabitat
For several years now, tech companies have been at work to develop clear solar panels that can double as windows, but the Current Window provides a gorgeous stained glass twist on that idea. Created by Dutch designer Marjan van Aubel, the window generates an electrical current by harvesting the energy created when sunlight hits a colored pigment — much like photosynthesis in a plant — and sends that power to a USB port in the window ledge.

Door design hacks grant the structure passage to modern utility
PSFK
To celebrate their 70th anniversary, wood manufacturer Abe Kogyo and artist nendo have designed a series of seven doors that are part innovation, part design and part utility. They transformed the basic structure of a simple wooden door into a series of ideas: a door with sliding panels that allows light to filter through, a door that doubles as a shelf and storage. The series fuses technology and expertise from the manufacturer with the clever, elegant designs of the artist.
