Energy Star Directive 6 is now official — must be in place by Dec. 31

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released the final ENERGY STAR Version 6.0 Residential Windows, Doors, and Skylights Specification. The Requirements for Directive 6 Compliance take effect at the end of 2014; in January. Working with the DOE/EPA/Energy Star for 2 years, AWDI has developed a resource Installation Website library with 40 Installation Component Sections, that can be linked to any manufacturer's website and/or accessible from labels on their windows - to provide full compliance with Directive 6's requirement for consumer facing Installation Instructions.

GE releases video on HERS Index Score and new water heater product

GE will be soon introducing a new high performance water heater, the GeoSpring Hybrid Electric Water Heater. As part of the announcement of the new product GE has produced a video. The seven minute production introduces the RESNET HERS Index Score stating that it is like the miles per gallon sticker for homes.

Comments for formaldehyde proposal due May 8

The Environmental Protection Agency extended the public comment period for its formaldehyde proposal, and a reminder to those who want to submit comments that they are due this week — May 8. The agency also hosted a public meeting in late April in Washington, D.C., to gain additional input on its June 2013, proposal, Formaldehyde Emissions Standards for Composite Wood Products rule, as it pertains to laminated products.

How to fix a drooping door

You may have an interior or exterior door in your home that used to work fine, but recently it's started to rub on the floor or against the jamb opposite the hinge jamb. To some degree, this is normal for wood doors hung in wooden jambs. Gravity, combined with the door's opening and closing, works to pull the door down and off its hinges. The two forces can work hinge screws loose and can pull the door jamb away from the rough opening if the jamb was not properly installed.

Residential window volumes to continue to grow at double-digit pace

Driven by the new construction market, total residential window volumes are expected to continue to increase at double-digit rates to 48.4 million units in 2014 and 54.6 million units in 2015, according to the AAMA 2013/2014 study of the U.S. market for windows, doors and skylights. The report, compiled by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association, provides details for geographic regions and commercial market segments, as well as framing materials, glass usage and configuration types.

Glare from energy-efficient windows can melt siding, vehicles

The states where residents can't wait to move away

New data is out on the states people want to leave, and it's tailor-made to troll all your Facebook friends from Illinois and the northeastern Amtrak corridor. Gallup asked people around the country whether they would move away from their states, given the chance. As it turns out, half of Illinois residents and 49 percent of all Connecticutians want to change states. In addition, it looks like a good chunk of the northeastern seaboard is just itching to pack up a U-Haul.
