Important message for all pilots
By Patrick Gilligan, COPA vice president of operations
COPA needs all pilots to complete a Cross Border survey. Your opinion counts so we need strong participation. Last year, I alerted members to the development of an additional procedure being developed by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) for crossing the Canada/U.S. border. The survey will provide statistical feedback to Canadian and U.S. officials to find a solution that both addresses their goals and minimizes duplication. COPA is heavily involved in finding creative solutions to minimize the detrimental consequences that any additional requirements will have on our sector of aviation. Please take a few moments and complete the following survey:

Planning underway for 2016 World Assembly
IAOPA
At the 27th IAOPA World Assembly last September hosted by AOPA China, the board attendees unanimously voted to accept the proposal from AOPA US to host the 28th IAOPA World Assembly in 2016. Planning for the upcoming meeting is already underway.

A site survey team is scheduling a visit to the proposed host city, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to review possible venues, hotels and transportation arrangements. Milwaukee, which is located on the shores of Lake Michigan, is best known for its famous breweries but there is way more to the city than beer and baseball. Milwaukee is rich in historical and cultural attractions. It is close to Chicago with plenty of nonstop flights to and from around the world. More importantly, it is located an hour south of the mecca of all general aviation: Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Our planned date — July 22-24, 2016 — will allow you to attend the IAOPA World Assembly and then stay on for as long as you like to visit EAA's AirVenture 2016 the week of 25-31 July 25-31, 2016.

Avro Lancaster KB882; coming in from the cold?
Warbird News
Last year, there was a brief stir concerning the plight of a rare combat veteran Avro Lancaster on outdoor display at Madawaska Municipal Airport in the Canadian city of Edmunston, New Brunswick. The city has owned Lancaster Mk.10P KB882 since her RCAF retirement in 1964. The Lancaster's condition has deteriorated significantly after decades sitting outdoors, and a time of reckoning has arrived.

Answering the call with lives on the line
The Star Phoenix
Barry Tolmie doesn't remember the first person he saved, but he remembers the first time things went really bad. The helicopter pilot was doing military search and rescue out of CFB Trenton in Ontario when his team got a call about a small plane crash in a forested area. On arrival, the trees were too thick for Tolmie to set the chopper down. He lowered the search and rescue technicians with a hoist, found a place to land and hiked in.

Bombardier, Chorus Aviation sign deal for at least 13 Q400 NextGens
The Canadian Press via Montreal Gazette
Chorus Aviation has placed an order for new planes after finalizing a contract with Air Canada that cuts costs and strengthens the partners’ ability to compete with WestJet Encore. The Halifax parent company of Jazz Aviation placed a firm order for 13 Bombardier Q400 turboprop planes valued at US$424 million at list prices. Options for 10 more Q400s would increase the value to $758 million. The planes will be mainly added through the end of 2016, with the fleet of 74-seat planes more than doubling to 44 by 2020.

Avoiding turbulence
FLYING
Ben Franklin said it 240 years ago: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." We'd all best apply that ounce of prevention shortly, because events are indicating 2015 will be a year of thunderstorms like we've never seen before. Throughout 2014 the clues were stacking up. In a normal year, only three or four incidents find pilots flying into the tops of thunderstorms and experiencing severe turbulence. Last year such events happened at only three- to four-week intervals.

Glider pilots to compete at Chilhowee Gliderport in Tennessee
Nooga.com
This April, nearly 30 glider pilots from across North and South America will gather at the Chilhowee Gliderport in Benton, Tennessee, to compete in the first-ever Pan American Gliding Championships. The gliderport, which borders Chilhowee Ridge and the Cherokee National Forest, is a treasure among soaring sites in the Southeast. Gliders are unpowered aircraft that utilize naturally occurring currents of rising air in the atmosphere to remain airborne. When conditions are favorable, experienced pilots can fly hundreds of miles before returning to their home airfields.
