Is your Aviation Document Booklet expiring?
    COPA
Did you know your Aviation Document Booklet (ADB) must be renewed every five years from date of issuance?

This fall, pilots, flight engineers and air traffic controllers will begin renewing their Aviation Document Booklets. Transport Canada first introduced the ADB in 2008 with a five year expiry date; thus, the majority of ADB holders will need to renew their booklets this year.

    Is your fly-in legal?
By Patrick Gilligan, COPA v-p operations
COPA provides Air Meet liability insurance for events organized by our Flights, including monthly meetings, COPA For Kids flights and fly-ins.

During the summer of 2012, I attended a number of fly-ins and took notes about how they were run in preparation for an upcoming review of our insurance with our new broker, Magnes. A few things stood out and got me thinking: "Does COPA Air Meet insurance really cover that?" and "Does this part of the fly-in require a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) from Transport Canada?" and "What if an accident occurs and a SFOC has not been issued? Can insurance companies refuse to pay because the fly-in was illegal?"

Returning to a dedicated minister of transport a significant step forward
    COPA
The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association welcomes The Honourable Lisa Raitt on her appointment as the federal Minister of Transport. Prior to this appointment, she served as Minister of Natural Resources and, most recently, as Minister of Labour.

We are also pleased that the Transportation portfolio has been returned to a stand-alone position. The previous Minister was triple-hatted with Transport, Infrastructure and Communities occupying his time.

Minister Raitt's connection to aviation is seen as a plus for our association. She was president and CEO of the Toronto Port Authority, operator of the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and she has been quoted recently, as MP for the Halton Region of Ontario, concerning airport development at the Burlington Airpark. This exposure to our sector of aviation provides background experience for her new position.
